Hi, Angus..!
Try with the software from http://www.bwgen.com

I have tried the BWGEN, Thanks.  But I find that it is time consuming, I wasn't sure if there is a more scientific way of creating the changes between the "brainwave" patterns and the amount of time you should sustain each one.

For example, Start off with Beta for 10 min.,  then slide into Aphla for 1 min., back to Beta for 30 sec, then back to Alpha.  Sustain for 10 min. before shifting into Theta and so on.  When using the BWGEN, I think as a novice creating a sample is hit or miss.

For those who are unfamiliar with the frequencies and want to experiment with the BWGEN and are unsure of the names and operating ranges, it is as follows:
Beta 15-30 Hz  Awakened mind, linear step by step logical thinking
Alpha 7-15 Hz  These waves are produced as the mind moves from external world to internal world
Theta 4-7 Hz   Associated with dream states and states of creativity
Delta 0-3 Hz   states of Deep sleep

Dear Angus...
Have you heard about CNR (Center for Neuroacoustical Research) ?
There are valuable info about altered states at frequencies higher than Beta. Explore it and do feedback, it will be appreciated.

As a warning this might be a tad long- sorry.

I have seen several posts, current and not so current that reference the use of cd's or binural beat frequencies.
Let me chime in, no pun intended, and mention what I have been using of late.

I have found a relativley inexpensive "hemisycn" type CD by Dr. Jeffery Thompson

These Cds contain various levels of theta, alpha delta waves inlaid in soothing music.

I started using these Cd's because I am at a great disadvantage for practicing OBE techniques.  I work nights and by day I watch the kids so generally speaking I only get fours of sleep until the weekends.  I don't really have the option to get a few hours of sleep and then wake up for 30-45min and then attempt a projection like so many have suggested.

The idea, from my perspective, was to train my brain to get used to more of these brainwaves  so when fully rested, and  I meditate without music, my brain is more accustomed to these wave patterns.

Since I have been using the cds I have found:
my trance state is super quick- almost no "relaxtion" exercise is needed.
Secondly, I have increased the frequency and intensity of what I would call "vibrations."  For me they were a kind of humming in my arms and legs.  Before using the CD's my "vibrations" where weak and mainly in my hands and feet.
Since using the CD's I can feels these vibes crawl up my arms and legs.  At times  (I'll explain when in just a seond) I even get a tingly sensation that is pulse-like  in my face and head.

I took the CDs one step further and burned two tracks onto a disk that are supposed to "tune up" the chakras which also use binural beats .  Immediately following the chakra tracks I copied some of the meditation music. THIS is when I get the best vibration response. _Tune up the Chakra and then proceed to the meditation. Also, when listening to simple notes that are supposed to be in tune with the chakras, I get vibration pulses that coincide with the notes on the Cd.  In other words, when a note is heard on the Cd, I get an electric feeling wash over my body at the same time.

Now for the the only thing that  I am unsure about.  From time to time i reach what I believe to be a super deep trance state.  The problem is it is so unbelievably uncomfortable, that after arousing my limbs and body,  I usually just throw off the headphones and go to sleep giving up for the night.

I am not sure if it is really a deepening of the trance state or maybe some other feeling I am unfamiliar with.  It happens about once a week.
