Dream Conversion/Maintaining Awareness

So last night I had my first semi-successful dream conversion! It did not last long but I have a few questions to anyone who does this on a regular basis.  Here is what happened:

I went to sleep for about 4 hours and woke up at 4am.  I had been in a pretty deep sleep, no real clarity or dreams I could remember.  I made an intention to stay aware in my dreams as I feel back asleep.

I started to dream and weird things were happening off the bat. I was at my parents house and I saw my deceased dog as a puppy...my folks were watching a game of golf on tv (they don't watch golf) and suddenly I was inside the golf game myself! then I was swimming in a lake by the golf course with my boyfriend, and all of a sudden the water started churning with big waves.  We swam to the shore and watched the lake's massive waves and all of a sudden it hit me - duh, I'm dreaming. Well, now that I'm aware, let's get to projecting!

I think "awareness now" and suddenly I am floating out over my body in bed, then sinking through the floor.  Everything is fuzzy, heavy and dark.  After several firm thoughts of "clarity" and "awareness" and "I am light as a feather" I move to another reality frame.   At this point I find myself sitting in a room with a bed, and an astral (non physical) friend next to me.  She seems like I know her so I am not really concerned with her, but I look out the window and gasp when I see a UFO full of beings staring right at me! This startles me and I begin to doubt the situation and begin to lose awareness of my control over it.  This is the point I need to work on I think. Anyway, I faded back into a dream mode, where I was dreaming but unaware again, before I woke up.

Does anyone have any tips on maintaining awareness throughout a projection when it feels like it's fading?  I think I must either doubt myself, or somehow get too distracted to focus and control the situation.

I am stoked about dream conversion though - it seems like a perfect method of exploration for me :-)

Thanks all!
