I'm wondering...

I'm totally not sure if this is the right place to post this, or if something similar has been said. But here it goes anyway...

A few years ago, my mom's friend was in some sort of brainwave psychology thingy. She used my mom, my sister, and me for practice. XD Nothing bad, it's just some machine that measures your brainwaves, and makes you concentrate on certain ones, without you really knowing how you're doing it. It makes the person lower their stress levels and stuff. Apparently, my brain was way different from the other people she studied on, because mine made a perfect score or something... o_0 So she tried me on this other machine that was REALLY awesome, you play ping pong with your brain, and you think logically/creatively to move the thing around. It was so much fun!!!

Well... The reason she put me on the other machine, the one with the ping pong, was because she thought I could make it work. Before, it worked in theory, but barely anybody could actually make the game work, most people didn't have that much control, I guess you could call it. But I did. I could control my thinking enough to make it work. Normally, and she showed me this, the game paddle would go back and forth really fast across the screen, not working for the game. Because most people can't think with just one side of their mind, apparently. Or something. I'm not even quite sure how I made it work, but I did... I thought this was amazing, and I talked to her a LOT about it. She wanted to study my brain a lot, because she was interested. I apparently could trigger certain brainwaves by WANTING to. I didn't even really know what they meant, I would just look at, for example, the red bar on the screen (what it meant, I don't know) and it would go up. After all of this, I was in such a weird mood. o_0 I felt like I was there, but not there, at the same time.

Anyway... one night in her office, while I was reading one of her random brain books (I found them fascinating) I found a chapter on lucid dreaming. It REALLY fascinated me, so when I got home, I researched it, and go so much more interested in it. After reading a bit on it, I found out about Astral Projection and OBE's, and then became curious in that. That night, before I fell asleep, I tried one of the methods  that it mentioned, rocking your consciousness back and forth like you're on a ship. It worked. It was incredible. I know it wasn't a dream. I fell out of my bed, looked at myself, and freaked out. Freaking out is apparently something you're NOT supposed to do, and I "woke up" and got aggravated at myself for freaking out. XD I was just so shocked that it worked.
I tried it again the next night, and no luck. No luck until I went to visit her again, and because of that forced brainwave activity, I again got that feeling of being here, but not. Again, that night, I tried, and succeeded. But again, I scared myself by walking through a wall, and "woke up".
Then she moved. -_- I haven't been able to do that since, because I can get close, but not quite there. You have to be in the right state of mind, I guess, or otherwise your logical side falls asleep first, and you calmly drift into sleep, as you do every night. I'm really trying to figure out exactly how to GET into that state again, because all I can find out is that I have to be in the delta? (I think) state,  but KEEP your logical side of your brain awake. It's hard without those little bars on the computer screen. But I'm trying, and hoping I can soon figure it out.
I THINK that the way it works is basically that when you sleep, your logic-ness also sleeps. I'm not quite sure why. Somehow, during those experiments, my logic side was kept more awake, so it didn't fall asleep so easily.
When you are about to fall asleep normally, your thoughts drift around aimlessly until you fall asleep. I'm not sure anyone can recall the LAST thing they thought of before they fell asleep. Maybe they can remember the last topic they thought about, but not the last THOUGHT. Because their logic goes to sleep, and that is what can remember things. The creative side holds your dreams.
I'm SURE the trick is to keep the logic awake when you fall asleep, while your body paralyzes itself like it does each night when you sleep. And then once you're paralyzed, you can push yourself out. The problem is, it's REALLY hard to keep the logic awake. As soon as I can find an effective way to do that, I'm sure it will come easily. ^_^

I know that a lot of you on here can do this easily, and I think that's awesome. I'm just trying to figure out EXACTLY how it works, I'm not only trying to make it work for me. I hope I'm not repeating what others have said, and if so, maybe someone can point me in the right direction to finding out more. ^_^

Well to begin with, you've come to the right place.

There are numerous threads on exit techniques, what works etc. You're probably better off asking specific questions than something so broad like "how does it all work?". If you do that we'll end up in a discussion about a fake moon landing or aliens.

Excellent observation!! And you're quite right. This is called MA/BA -- Mind Awake/Body Asleep. You essentially want to get to the point, as you've concluded, where you are fully conscious, but your body is asleep. This 'frees your mind' so to speak. You are then able to to have an OBE. This is what you've described above, the feeling of leaving your body and walking through walls. And yes, you are right about fear. Actually fear and excitement are both the most common reasons people are abruptly pulled back. Any type of strong emotion will do that, but those two are the most common.

Different techniquest work for different people. I would suggest checking out the Astral FAQ  and Permanent Astral Topics sections of this forum. You can find a bunch of posts on definitions, theories and techniques in both of those sections.

Another technique you may want to try is phasing. Given your ability to reach certain states while awake, you may find that easier. It's the method I personally prefer, but everyone's different. In this approach, you don't feel any bodily seperation. It's purely a seperation/expansion/re-focus of consciousness. Below is a link to Frank's post on phasing in the Astral FAQ section. This is one of the best intro's to this approach:

Also, I think your inability to reach this state without using the machines is simply a mental block. It's something that you can overcome, you just need to realize (and fully believe) that you could do it before the machines and you can certainly do it now, without them. And you can.

Thank you so much for your help. And no, I've never looked into phasing, I'll have to try that.
