Title: Focus Levels
Post by: Jbrown832 on September 09, 2010, 19:20:08
Can anybody tell the logic behind counting upwards to achieve different levels?

The initial count to 10, does relax me, so I notice the effects of this. However from 10 upwards I don't notice these so called changes to different focus levels.

What am I supposed to feel that's different? So far the repeating of the numbers 12 or 15 doesn't take me deeper lol.

This is regards to 'The Gateway Experience' cd's. I just feel as though this focus system isn't having any affect on me.

Any help/recommendations would be wonderful.

Thank you.

It's a completely subjective system.

You could as easily used the alphabet... or animals... or ANYTHING.  :)

As for noticing the changes, it's because you're not getting to them.
It takes more than just sitting there saying numbers.

The count to 10 isn't meant to "relax you".  That's the job of the progressive relaxation technique that Monroe uses in that particular track.
The point to counting is to focus your mind more and more.  As you progress and become more skilled, you could very well hit Focus 10 before you even get to #2.  :)
It really sounds like you're confusing your state with Focus 3.

Also, the focus levels don't "affect you".
The focus levels were laid out in such a manner that each successive "subjective numbered" level has a different association with it.

The numbers given to the Focus levels may be regarded as arbitrary. But for a set of people, when they enter the same kind of brain wave patterns, they are said to have entered the same Focus Level.

I'm lost, what exactly is the role of the focus levels then?

When Monroe tells me I'm now in focus 10 or focus 12, I'm basically just supposed to be more relaxed/focused?

From what I remember of Gateway, the count to 10 should take you into focus 10. The actual count of the numbers don't really mean anything at first, but once you start achieving a clear focus 10, the countdown will help you enter it easier in future attempts. You should already be good and relaxed by 3 (F3). If you're not making it into focus 10, keep doing that exercise until you do (could be weeks or longer or shorter). If you're not sure, then you're not there yet. It's as clear as a lightswitch being flipped.
