A lot of my friends have took interest in lucid dreaming(OBE) and the concept of it all, Point being is theyve been asking me all about it and i was curious, whats the best way to explain to someone exactly what their getting themselves into? for example explaining how its more than just "you can control your dreams!", pretty much saying its more than just a dream. Reason im asking this is because i feel what their doing right now in their real lives will have a major-negative affect on them when their trying to do so, for example a few of them do a lot of mind-altering drugs frequently and thats automatically probably not a good decision

I think their just caught up in the whole idea of "I CAN CONTROL MY DREAM!" and how it can relate to not being in the normal mind state.

I dont know where to start?

Ya im not very experenced in AP, but I think you should tell your friends that they should have bigger things to worry about! Of course im sure you already do.

I don't think you need to explain all about how it's more than just dreaming.  Just explain about the skills needed, focus and control (the opposite of tripping on mind altering drugs)  Tell them all about how awesome it is and explain how the effects of hallucinogenic drugs will hinder their efforts, at least as far as "doing whatever they want" in dreams because it takes control and lucidity away from you.  If they actually listen and get good at lucid dreaming then maybe you could fill them in on the larger implications of what they're doing    At that point they would have enough interest to accept the idea.  I've learned that sometimes if you tell somebody everything right at the beginning their mind doesn't accept it and they lose interest.

I think the important thing is to get them interested in it first. When they do it for themselves, they'll realize all that other stuff and that there's more to it than just "controlling my dreams yay xD".

This is my opinion on what a Lucid Dream is:  http://unlimitedboundaries.ca/2010/11/04/what-are-lucid-dreams/

The problem, I believe, when people try to define a lucid dream is that they do exactly what you said... they call it "more than just a dream".  Well, to me, that's a massive understatement... because really "what is a dream".  To say that your experience was "just" a dream isn't giving the experience the due consideration that it requires.

I'd call them "non-physical experiences of differing levels of awareness".
I no longer agree with the term "dream" anymore as an objective experience.

IMO, let them live out their own path.  If you don't like the drug aspect, find new friends.  I have a dear friend of thirty years and we've had to break our connection because she has moved onto such a path that I just can not go with her.  I love her and I will be here for her when or if she needs me, but sometimes you just have to get away to save yourself.  People must be able to learn from their own mistakes.  All the talking in the world will not help.

I see what your saying, but it doesnt bother me that they use drugs, i my self use to do mind-altering drugs about 2 years back now but i have stopped and been sober now off them for a year. I pretty much put all that behind me.

Its just i dont want them trying to do this because their viewing it as just "controlling your dream!"

and thanks everyone for your alls opinions on this
