So I have been attempting astral projection/obe for almost 10 years not off and on for months at a time. The closest i ever come is the exiting part. I am either stuck and cant see anything ( only feel the sensation and resistance ) or I can see and i am rubberbanding back to my body over and over.

Lately however I cannot even reach this point. Every time I have gotten to this point i am on the verge of falling asleep. However I am unable to fall asleep on my back anymore.

does anyone have these problems?
Do I have to be very close to sleep to project?
I never feel sleep paralysis unless i am on the verge of sleep any tips?

I am cutting caffeine out of my diet completely too. I have found over the last few months that caffeine has taken away my ability to rach any vibrations and or projection at all. When it was out of my system I had a near OBE, but since its been back in my system i have been unable. Maybe its unrelated but it wont hurt to cut it out anyways.. lol

The problem can be almost anything honestly... it's too hard to know for certain at this point. 

Some people say Caffeine hurts Projection practice... but it really comes down to an individual thing.

Sleep isn't required in order to project.
What is required is that you're able to push your awareness away from this physical reality long enough for the natural projection reflect to kick in.

You never have to experience vibrations to project.
You never have to experience sleep paralysis to project.

For you in particular... you'd have to give us more information on what method(s) you're currently using.

I hear you, ANMonte87!  I'm really in much the same position!

I've never thought of caffeine as a problem (but then again, a good strong cup of coffee before bed really knocks me out, so I have to be cautious of that.)

My best successes later in life have all been lying on my side rather than my back. Also, my most successful recent projections have not had 'vibrations' or sleep paralysis beforehand. Back in my early 20's when I was making my exit, there was always both vibrations and sleep paralysis, and I must admit I kind of missed them.

Currently, I'm working my way through several of the different exit strategies that I've found on this site (including Xanths' excellent suggestions on Unlimited Boundaries). Hopefully, one of them will help me figure out what I need to overcome this challenge.

(As an aside, I started working on 'projection' 25-odd years ago (and gave up 20 odd years ago due to some very bad experiences, which I now understand were my bad).  I had a sudden re-interest and discovered all the new resources so easily available now, so I've been working at it again for the last 3 years, and have managed the same level of success as you, which to be honest, I'm very happy with. However, no matter what I do, it's been a year since I've managed anything beyond that level).

 I would say it's because you are not consciously ready to do it yet.

Try to spend some time meditating on why you aren't successful. Meditation is the single most valuable "tool" for AP.

When you go to sleep every night, your consciousness leaves your body, whether you are on your back, side, stomach or sleeping like a bat upside down.

Instead of looking at all of the reasons why, like Caffeine or a sleep position, why not question yourself on what the real reason that's holding you back is. Do this and you might be surprised with the answer you find.

Lionheart's answer was excellent.   You are the best person to find out why.   The rest of us are only guessing.    Whenever I have a problem I keep thinking about it and I always get a correct answer.   It may not come straight away but it does not take long.
