A few years ago I started trying to project - I had some sort of 'awakening' as a response to tremendous grief and Monroe's books helped me get an understanding of what might be going on. I had two pretty convincing projections early on, followed by a year or more of regular lucid dreaming and occasional verified projections. In my experiences lucid dreams and OBEs are closely related and sometimes it is hard to separate one from the other. The fact that I verified some of my lucid dreams makes me think that they were really OBE's but with some attached dream imagery. Still, only the first two seemed like I was a coherent 'me' separate from my body but on the physical plane. The rest are more tenuous.

More recently I have been away from attempts and my sleep patterns have been 'dead' - fall asleep and then wake up 9 hours later. Talk about boring. But restorative anyway.

I am ready to delve into the astral realm again - and I expect to be chatting it up around here to create a positive mental climate for the attempts (and successes!)

Hello Patty!

Welcome to the forum! You may want to read some of my past posts about hybrid OBE/LD experiences. I think I've been experiencing some of the same things as you.

Take care,

Thanks grenade and Jeni.

Hi Grenade - yeah, I used the same handle. I only posted there maybe fifteen times over 6 weeks. There were some interesting threads and I appreciate all the work that the webmaster put into it, but it was too cumbersome.  It looks like there are more posters/more activity here - I've been enjoying what I have read so far. It's also great when there are enough people to bring a wide range of experience to a message board.

Hi Jeni - I'm always happy to meet someone who has similar experiences. I think that the first two were so much more complete/real-seeming, because I needed them so badly and had never been consciously separate from my body before. So when I realized what was going on, I was startled into full alertness. Unfortunately, after a couple seconds I was further startled back into my body. So they were really brief.

But after the first couple - the experiences didn't startle me quite so much, and so I don't seem to be able to drop all the dream - stuff that is going on in them. It's like I'm half asleep saying "Oh yeah, right, another OBE, just hit the snooze okay?"  Which kind of ticks me off when I wake up and feel like I have lost an opportunity! But like I said there was some validation which was comforting.

Haven't really projected from a completely awake state - Trance always borders sleep for me and I usually am skating back and forth over the line, or alternatively realizie that I am separate from my body sometime during the night. it sounds like being able to sit in a chair, achieve trance, and project is a very different experience than what I've done.

Talk to you later -

Patty

Hello Patty,

I know what you mean. I think most people who are trying to project start out that way. In fact, I haven't projected with out already having been asleep, or drifting off to it.

I sometime feel like I'm about to OBE whilst falling alseep. It's nice when you're not so tired, and you want to have one. But when you're really tired (like I was last night) and you just want to sleep, it can be pretty daunting. In fact, it took me over a half an hour to get to sleep just because I kept almost entering the OBE state.

I know what you mean about wanting to turn it into a projection. You're actually better off not doing so when you're that tired because you'll end up having a lousy experience, or being startled back into your body. A few nights ago, I entered that state, to the point where everything was black. After being in that state for a few seconds, I was shot back into my body out of pure fear. I woke up trembling. In short, it's best to attempt OBE in any shape or form when you're well-rested and in good spirit.

My most vivid real-time OBE took place a few days ago. It actually wasn't an intended one, but it was very nice indeed. It was about 9:30 am, and I must have been in some dream-related pre-OBE state. With all my training lately, I must have been some how able to realise what was going on and turn it into a conscious projection. I floated around my room, did some back flips, etc. I then went into my crawlspace (which I have never seen before) and saw white bags of things, which Dad later verified to be insulation. I then had some attached dream imagery - when I flew out of the roof, I was on top of a completely different building. I don't know why, when everything else was an OBE, except maybe because I had a thought whilst OB what threw me off for a second, and/or that I was low on energy at that point. I then went back down through my crawlspace and into my room, and eventually back into my body.

I've also had experiences where I had the entire exit experience and then found myself in a different house, having what is an OBE to me at the time. I believe this is actually a form of projection which is either high in the buffer zone, below the astral plane; or what's called a "virtual reality projection". Robert Bruce writes about "virtual reality projections" in his "Treatise on Astral Projection".

It's all a lot of fun - when you can have the experience. I can certainly relate to those still trying to have their first; it took me a long time to get mine, and I still have a long way to go. The trance state itself is very nice; my meditation doubles as a way to relax. I also do a little yoga when I get a chance, which I believe also enhances projection ability.

Good luck with your adventures. If there is anything I can help you with, feel free to give me a shout.

Take care,

Jeni
