Title: How far along am I?

I have been practicing meditation for the passed almost a year, and I just want to see how far along I am. My ultimate goal is to meet my higher self and find out some more about me.

When I relax, and keep my consciousness awake, I can get to the point where my body is asleep. I feel as if I am weightless, or in space or something, I sense my body might be spinning or vibrating. I can hear the ringing in my ears, which I know is no more then blood rushing through the veins behind them.

I have a problem with my heart beat too... it seems when I'm so relaxed it is a constant reminder of my body... very distracting. It's only a problem half the time too.

It is at this point I begin to get excited and lose my focus. This is what I have been working on lately, getting my mind to calm down once I reach this state... which I have come to believe is focus 10.

What I want to know is just how close or far am I from my goal? Am I ahead or behind the game?

Hi Rewen

In my opinion,  meeting your "higher self" is a darned sight easier than what you make out!  There is no "ruler" to measure how far along you are.

You don't need to go through the complicated relaxation process, or reaching F10 or anything like that.

Simply sit somewhere quietly, preferably surrounded by nature.  Let your mind and body relax (but not to the point of straining).  You can be sat on a park bench doing this - you don't need to lose all sense of your physical.

Quieten all your "worldly" thoughts.  Start to drift, without losing your sense of self.  Then observe what is going on in your head.  If you want, ask questions and note what comes back immediately.

Your higher self is simply you.  It is a part of you sat in a corner of your mind waiting for you to acknowledge it.  There's nothing mystical or esoteric about it.  

Get to know it.  Spend time with it.  Sit in its company.  After a while, you will begin to hear it and know it for what it is.

Focus on the period between beats. If you do this while in a light trance state, the heartbeat will eventually disappear from your awareness.
