Is there a difference between OBE and having a nightmare?

Whenever I get nightmares, I would see myself laying in bed.  I see my body and I noticed that I can't move.  My heart would start beating fast when that happens and I force myself to wake up by moving my toes first or relaxing my body by counting 1-2-3 then I would force myself to get up soon as I hit 3.  Now, I can reach this nightmare state or seeing myself state by eating McChicken. I have done this with lights off and lights on.  When I turn off the lights and try to have nightmares, I usually get scared because I feel like someone is watching me or trying to scare me.  One day, I turned on the lights and do the samething.  Next thing I know, I see myself or atleast my body.  I remember somebody posted before that he would think that he's a log and would spin out of his body.  Anyways, lights were on, I see my body and I couldn't move.  I thought to myself "ok, relax and don't get nervous.  I will count to 3 and when 3 hits, I would spin and when my front body hits the bed.  I would push myself up".  I did exactly what I told myself to do and next thing I know. I'm floating in my bedroom like a blimp.  I was not sure how to control myself so I let myself float.  This was happening for good 10-20 seconds and when I reached the corner of my bedroom.  I heard a voice on top of corner ceiling and it startled me.  I remember myself dropping slowly and I ran towards my body and dive right in my body.  Woke up right away and see my girl by my foot watching T.V.  I didn't see her when I was floating like a blimp or maybe imagining that I was floating around my room.

Now, i'm not an expert nor know anything about OBE but is it possible to go to this state by going through nightmares state and relaxing your body instead of getting scared?

I call it nightmare when I see my bedroom and see myself lying there and couldn't move anything except my toes.

hmm... interesting...

You seem to be describing what Oliver Fox called the "False Awakening" and what we nowadays call "sleep paralysis".

What happens is you wake up to find yourself completely paralysed.  There is a sense of foreboding in the room, or tension, and maybe a feeling that there is some kind of presence in the room (or someone watching you).  It's scary, and you try really hard to break the grip of the paralysis.  Suddenly you manage to wiggle a toe, or move a finger and you snap out of it.

This is a very well known phenomenon.  Whilst we sleep, the muscles in our bodies relax and become inoperative.  This stops us from acting out our dreams.  Usually we're unconscious when this happens, but sometimes  we can wake up, whilst our bodies are still paralysed in this way.  This is quite common.

All of the unpleasant sensations, such as tension, feeling of presence, strange noises etc, ie all the things which make this experience feel to you like a nightmare, are not really understood or explained medically/scientifically.  But never the less, these sensations are common to people who experience sleep paralysis.

In OBE terms, sleep paralysis (the "nightmare") can be a launch pad for OBE's (as you discovered).  When you find yourself in this state try to float out of your body and have an OBE.  I suggest that when this happens to you, try really hard not to get frightened, but go with the flow.  You will not be harmed!  Think of floating up and see what happens.  Try to leave the bedroom.  Get away from your physical body.  If you succeed in doing this the tension/nightmare feelings should disappear.

It's interesting that you didn't see your girl by your foot.  Again, this type of "reality fluctuation" is common and irritating, and a bit hard to explain.  But the theory goes that when you're "out" you are not actually in the physical, but in a kind of reflection of the physical world.  Not everything is reflected perfectly, so we don't see things exactly as they really are.

Try not to get spooked by these "nightmares". Go along with them and let us know what happens!

Hi,
I don't think I want to try it again.  Couple years back when I was practising OBE.  I would experience something weird everynight before I go to sleep. One time, I had 3 sleep paralysis in 1 night.  I woke up, went to the washroom then when I came back to bed, I see myself lying there.  Started wiggling my toe and obviously I woke up so I got up again went to the washroom and when I went back to bed.  I see myself again so I woke myself up.  It was weird because it's like deja vu but it was in my dream.  It's like a dream on top of another dream.  3 dreams in a row and they're all the same.

I am a true believer that if you practise or seek to accomplish OBE.  You will eventually find/get what you're looking for.  Just keep telling yourself that you are aware of everything at any given time.
