My experiences include a full-colour rice padddy, a rather fetching woman and various shapes in purple, grey and blue.
I'd say both with 1 being more common.

When I pay attention to myself falling asleep (not trying to project) I see that there is a point where I am starting to zone out but I am not asleep yet. Sometimes I get startled by a flash of an image that happens to play out. To me it looks like it's on my eyelids.
If I don't pay attention, (like this week I have been exhausted and wanted to plummet into sleep) I don't notice it, I just fall asleep.
I always think of those images that occur right before sleep as hypnogogic images.
Why do you ask? I thought they were separate from projection phenomena. Can a person use them? ( Come to think of it, I guess I use them to keep myself alert - when they startle me they keep me from falling completely asleep.)

Patty, i assumed they were dreams and by focusing upon them you could induce a lucid dream. i am trying to achieve a W.I.L.D as a pretext to OBE they seem easier.

you sound like you may get what I do.What I see sometimes.Its like a dense fog.Its always diff. for me.It swirls around the outside of my eye lids somedays.And towards the center other days.
Yesterday was cool.It was like this fog was coming from behind me.In my eyelids I could see it building up around the outsides.It was like a ring moving forward.And getting denser and denser.Eventually till it was just a dense ball of fog.Till it dissapears in the distance.This kept on repeating.

im still a bit unsure as to what the hypnogogic state is, could someone pleae clarify...... is it...
1).... stray energy forming simple shapes and symbols in your minds eye???
OR.....
2) .... actual visions of events just the same as if you were dreaming (but still in trance)
