So with my time off work I'm experimenting with some new things I've never tried before. Tonight im trying melatonin and I took it about 30 minutes ago and am feeling really heavy already. Has anyone else had any luck with this?
I have taken Melatonin quite a lot for insomnia... usually it makes me fall asleep and no OBEs.... however, I have switched to 5-HTP (5-Hydroxy-triptophan) which is a precurser to seratonin, which is a precurser to melatonin.... and with that I have been having SERIOUS vivid dreams, including a recurring tsunami dream (though I am not frightened in the dream, it's weird actually....) The way I look at it is that vivid dreams = possible lucid dreams = possible OBEs.... so I would recommend 5-HTP over melatonin for that. I am not sure why I am more aware during dreams with 5htp than melatonin though...
can you buy it over the counter? Walgreens or Kroger?

It's a supplement just like melatonin.... completely legal and over the counter :) just make sure not to take more than what is suggested.... I think 300 mg is the highest they recommend, as it is hard on the stomach in higher doses, and also mixed with other seratonin-interfearing prescription drugs like migraine meds, MAOI's, and certain depression drugs, it can cause a very serious condition called sertaonin sickness. I take 100-200 mg (1 or 2 pills... they are 100mg each) and I have been having the vivid dreams.
I took the malatonin last night and it made me feel heavy especially my face. This helped make me disoriented during meditation but otherwise unsuccessful. What I did not like about it is that I slept all day and didn't want to wake up. Also I don't recall any of my dreams. It put me in a very deep sleep.
I remember I was recommended by a doctor to take Melatonin for a week period when I was suffering from insomniac. This stuff is pretty hardcore and shouldn't be taken lightly. I remember having a hard time getting up in the morning after taking it, a really hard time, it was almost like a hangover. The doctor also told me to be careful about taking with penicillin, because it has some kind of side effect. My opinion, is stay away from drugs(especially this one) if you are trying to do something like experience an OBE, it alters your body's natural functions.
I've tried Melatonin off and on for many years hoping that it would work for me, but even in the small doses I always wake up feeling lousy -- hard to clear my head all day long. I guess it works for someone or they wouldn't sell it, but it doesn't work for me.
yeah it is different for everyone.
i have melatonin for non-sleepy times,and i've found that i've had lucid dreams (tho that's normal for me most nights) and recall has been fine.
the tablets i have are very small,i can't remember off the top of my head how many mgs in each,and i take no more than 2 or 3 at a time.
also i feel no grogginess in the morning.
i've tried a number of different sleeping aids in the past - man made and herbal,and i've found most of them unsatisfactory,especially if i want to meditate before bed or have full dream recall.
so it really does come down to trial and error with these things.
The best supplements for lucid dreaming, which I've tried several times now are described below. BTW, the best two supplements to get galantamine are "Brilliant Dreams" and "Galantamind". Look them up on Google. Everything I've learned so far is from the book "Advanced Lucid Dreaming" by Thomas Yuschak.
Keep in mind - I'm not a doctor. Don't take any of this without first doing your own research. I've had some very powerful experiences - LDs only so far, no OBEs with this, though I've had OBEs in the past.
Lucid Dream Supplementation
Supplements:
* Galantamine (in the form of Lycoris Radiata extract) - to induce lucid dreams, is a Acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. Galantamine inhibits the breakdown of acetylcholine which builds increased levels of that chemical in the body. Supposedly increases memory and is used with Alzheimer's patients.
* Choline (Citrate or Bitartrate (preferred)) - These "choline salts" are quickly absorbed into the body and intensify the action of Galantamine. The salts jumpstart the lucid dream process but wear off quickly.
* GPC (choline alfoscerate/L-alpha GPC/Alpha GPC) This starts up where the choline salts leave off. The GPC takes longer to take action and to wear off. It extends the length of lucid dreams.
Extra Supplements:
* Vitamin B complex including calcium pantothenate/pantothenic acid (Vitamin B5)
* Magnesium/Calcium/Zinc supplement
* Melatonin
Dosages:
* Choline Salts: 500mg
* Galantamine: 8mg
* GPC: 600mg - 1200mg (start with 600mg)
Directions:
Take the Vitamin B complex and the Calcium/Magnesium/Zinc "extra supplements" in the morning with breakfast. Go to sleep between 10pm and 11pm. Sleep 4 - 5 hours. Wake up and take all three supplements and go back to sleep. Once you start feeling them take effect, after 1 - 1.5 hours, you can do a WILD meditation or just go back to sleep and have LDs. Take this combination once per week - preferably on Friday or Saturday evenings (you don't have to work the next day). The most often to take it is once every four days. Limit alcohol to at most one drink the evening before. For the first few LDs, take just the Galantamine and the Choline Salt. After a few LDs, add the GPC to the combniation and note the differences. Add melatonin (less than .5mg) if you're having trouble falling back asleep after waking up after 4 - 5 hours. I've had no side effects at all. Do your research first though!

Melatonin and 5-htp work by suppressing REM sleep, thus creating a REM rebound effect when they wear off ( REM sleep is then intensified to make up for the earlier deficit). They work really well in combination with an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor (such as galantamine) which should be taken about 5 hours later. This can give you some amazingly powerfull lucid dreams/projections.
Friends,
When I first started projecting back in 1987, I thought that the use of drugs would assist or enable success. To some degree it did but for the most part I realized a lot of it was a mental crutch. Now, I am not saying that taking these drugs should be forbidden, but explorerd in a healthy manner of experimentation and also discussed with a doctor who is a PROFESSIONAL!
I am glad that and am incredibly lucky that I can pull a OBE out of the hat weekly. With that statement, its nice to achieve this with a iron will then a drug.
Eveyone can project! It is just a matter if you want to succeed!
Food for thought!

I agree with TVOS. My best AP's are after a day of good healthy eatin and good exercise. When I've had a good workout, I tend to have a VERY natural sleep with remembered experiences later that night. Being in good health with clarity of mind makes a difference. Having a stressful or non-active (lazy) day and taking melatonin will just make you crash. OBE'ing takes a lot more than just being tired.
