I do not see where it would matter. It is not really how you do it, but as long as you can do it. Sometimes I find falling is good while other times I like to fly up. If something feels like it is working for you go for it.

Alice had got so much into the way of expecting nothing but out-of-the-way things to happen, that it seemed quite dull and stupid for life to go on in the common way.

The downward motions are usually described as being meant for trance induction. Upward movement seems more useful for projection methods. It really isn't clear to me why this could not be reversed.

Does the stopping of the motion and restarting with the breath help? It sounds a little like the variation on the projection method of being on the circumference of a large wheel and alternating the direction of the movement from time to time.

For trance induction I like to feel myself flowing along on a raft of some sort. It is easier than imagining falling.

I use a deep out breath, and feel my body sink into the bed. This downward movement gets me relaxed. Once the body is relaxed, I use the inhale breath to move my mind upwards. Like a car jack, I inhale and move up, and pause when I exhale, and then move up further on the next inhale. Never moving down.

I get out consciously probably once a month, but it goes in spurts. I do better in the summer than in the winter. I'll have all my sponteneous projections from july thru october. Then nothing all winter. Full moons don't seem to have an effect as much as the temperature and humidity does.
I'm sure if I practiced more, I could do better. But I'm lazy, I don't push myself to do this stuff like I used to when I was in my twenties.

hi i was wondering weather imagining my body on a lift going UP as opposed to down. i go up the lift on the INHALE and stop on the exhale. Is this ok or must it be the act of falling?
