Well, basically it is being done in contrast to the regular method of being able to "become aware" of yourself when in a lucid dreaming or OBE state.  Normally you would, when performing regular mundane actions during the day, occasionally do a "reality check", repeating as often as necessary so that this self-awareness reflex becomes automatic.

I had noticed that the effect has become far more pronounced and automatic when practicing it in "non-mundane" circumstances, i.e., while being in a strange neighborhood, while driving a different route home from work, while being at a place at the "wrong time" (like being at the office at 10pm at night), etc.

Yes!  It's outlined very well and clearly in the Astral Dynamics book. I don't have it with me right now, but it's in there as well as in some of RB's treatises available on here.

I have been doing the "reality check" exercises several times a day, whenever I leave my desk at work or home or my bed.  What I've noticed is that it has a much stronger impact on my psyche if I travel first to an "unfamiliar" place before doing it.  Like driving down a back road or through a different neighborhood and doing it there.

Has anyone else tried this or noticed any difference?

Thanks
