Hello, I have a bit of a long story for something that was actually very short to experience, and not that exciting - it's taken from my dream journals. However for me the small encounter was a verification exercise and has created opportunities to look at further experiences in a different context.

Friday 6th November, 2009.
I stayed at my wife's parent's house last week and I have only slept there twice before. On this occasion when we went to bed I woke up during the night as I had to use the toilet (was desperate!). As per usual when waking up the noise of me shuffling around in bed woke up my wife, and she did the typical what time is it and why did you wake me up etc - sometimes it's easier to just lie in bed and not bother  :|

When staying over at any guest's house for some reason I always feel somewhat self conscious of making too much noise during the middle of the night on excursions to bathroom. However I also knew that the bathroom was right next to my wife's parent's room, and it didn't help I was in a house I was not to familiar with, especially at night in the dark.

With this in mind I eventually got out of our bed, and headed to open the door to our room which was closed. Unfortunately as I opened the door it was quite a struggle, plus very noisy. I quickly established that you had to somewhat lean with your body weight and pull, which was due to the fact there was no gap between the carpet and the bottom of the door (as I pulled the door open I chuckled thinking if this was my place I would have planed the bottom of the door ages ago).

Anyway I made it to the toilet and that was fine. I then came back to bed, shut the door and drifted off back to sleep. However, I then woke up an hour later and thought great I have to go the toilet again! (I'm diabetic and my sugars were slightly high that night). So after lying in bed and contemplating the whole process, my wife soundly asleep, noise of the door – I thought way to much hassle, just forgot about it, and eventually I drifted off back to sleep.

I'm not sure on the time difference, but after a while I was awake and opening the door again heading to use the bathroom. I remember the physical struggle of opening the door, and having to lean with your body weight to try and open it. I also noticed the scraping sound of the door brushing along the dense carpet fibres as it opened. I then walked towards the bathroom and passing to my right was my in-laws bedroom (their door was open ajar).

As I stepped forward just past their door I heard a rustling noise from their bedroom. All of a sudden I heard the switch of a light coming on from within their room. So I stopped and stood still in the hallway looking through the slightly opened door and saw their bedroom was all lit-up. As I stared I saw a wardrobe at the end of the room, and noticed the silhouette of my father in-law getting out of bed. I knew he had to get up for work very early, and thought what great timing! But at the same time as I stood there for some reason I panicked and thought I can't be caught (was weird, like I was a child in trouble or something).

As soon as I had that thought I instantly woke up in bed. I realised that my second journey to the bathroom must have been an OBE or very lucid dream. I also ironically heard my father in-law waking up and leaving his bedroom to make his to the toilet. It was if my previous experience was cutt off in real time as it was happening.

So on this occasion I had my first OBE that was to physically real, and funny enough I didn't even know I was having one (I actually thought I was really on my way to the bathroom!).

Some interesting facts for me compared to other experiences I have had:

- My experience started when I was pulling the door open; the door was very physically hard to open, just as it was in reality. I do not remember leaving the bed; I'm wondering if it was as if the struggle to open the door which is what awoke me in the dream/OBE.

- When I was making my way to the bathroom as mentioned, I saw the light coming on in my in-laws room. I never would have known before but my wife said yes my father in-law does put the light on when he gets up at around 5am, in fact when he gets up my mother-in law gets up as well.

- I have never seen their room before as the door was always shut during the day, but checking the following day the room looked as exactly as I saw it in my experience when the door was open slightly ajar (there was the white wardrobe at the bottom as well). I even noticed the colour of the wallpaper in the room that was highlighted when I saw the light come on in the room.

- I would have dismissed this as a lucid dream if I had not had the experience of seeing their light come on in the bedroom and being able to verify what I saw the following day.

- It was the first time I witnessed something happening in the real physical environment from the OBE environment, all mixed together in real time.

- I have read before the thought of needing to go the bathroom and not going is a good way in tricking yourself to have an OBE. Funny but I guessed it worked. But I wondered what would have happened if he didn't wake up, would I have carried on to the bathroom to use the toilet in an OBE state?

-  I can't believe I have experienced something that gave me the opportunity to verify the experience the following day. I suppose it could have been just a very lucid dream but the fact that I noted what was in their room, and colour of wallpaper, the light coming on etc has to be some form of proof that one can actually view physical environments in real time from an OBE.

Very nice experience.

Thanks for posting.  :-)

I read the whole post - interesting experience! Yes the "desire" principle was popularised by Sylvan Muldoon in his book "The Projection of the Astral Body". It was one technique he highly recomended.  I think he used the idea of thirst, ie don't drink anything all evening and you will get all thirsty.  Then when you go to sleep your astral body will exit and try to get a drink of water. The trick is to "wake up" whilst out.  I forget how this is done!  But you seem to have done all of this perfectly by accident!  The trigger which woke you up was your in-laws switching on the bedroom light. Anyway, well done.  You had an RTZ which is quite difficult. Sylvan Muldoon only ever had RTZs.

Hi Alex Anderson.
That was a great story, thanx for posting it.
That Was an OBE no doubt. Perhaps you could have subtitled it "Busted on the Way to the Bathroom" LOL.  :-D
Anyways, that guilty feeling that you felt could well be interpreted as you being embarassed because you did Not know what proper state of mind you were in (= you where out of body yet not aware of it.) Don't worry about it though because it happens to many people all the time.
