Hallo LJ 57[:)]
Those were two out of body experiences (short ethereal projections actually). Many people report eperiences nearly identical to yours upon first leaving their body. One reason that both experiences were so short is that you were probably confused and disoriented. Your natural reference point is the physical body. Thinking about the physical body tends to cut short many projections. Another reason is that you apparently had no 'plan of action' to act upon once out of body.
As for conscious deliberate projections - those are actually much more difficult to induce. Most people are Much more likely to project upon waking from sleep. If you want to learn more I suggest obtaining a book containing various obe induction methods such as Robert Bruce's Astral Dynamics or Robert Monroe's Journeys Out of the Body.

Hi Greytraveller, Thank you for the reply and for insight into this. I would definitely say I was confused and disoriented by the experience. Despite doing astral projection exercises I was always a little bit skeptical of the whole thing. Hopefully I will be able to experience this again and control it a bit better.

Hey dont knock it ur on the right path. I personally had my first OBE's this way and its as good a way as any to get started. The problem lies in after time, if you havent had any more out of body experiences you will inevitably put it down to lucid dreaming, then a dream , then something you once dreamt about. Keep going and you wont need any validation as to what ur experiencing is real, you will know for sure .

I have had what I believe is an OBE on two occasions although the skeptical side of me has always thought it could be just a very lucid dream. The first was about 7 years ago. After unsuccesfully trying to consciously project for about 30 minutes I went to bed( I had been attempting astral projection for a few weeks when this happened ). I guess I went to sleep or into trance and I found myself hovering down by the floor next to my bed. At the time I had a very tall antique bed and for some reason I coud not rise up to see myself lying in the bed. After what seemed like less than 10 seconds I went back into my body. The 2nd projection which happened about two years ago occurred under similar circumstances but I was floating near the ceiling next to a bookcase. Again it lasted only a few seconds and it seems like trying to move around caused me to reenter my body. Can anyone shed any light on this and why I was able to achieve this during sleep after attempting to consciously project? I'm not sure why but I have never been able to get out while consciously attempting to do so in a relaxed state.
