OBE while awake

(I've never Astral Projected before today. I've read books on AP, read through the forums, and meditate daily so I'm familiar with most of the techniques. The thing is I think my first AP happened today, while I was awake, without using any of the technique I've read.)

I woke up for work around 5am this morning and got back home around 12. I was pretty tired so I passed out for 2 hours. I woke up around 2 but decided to lay in my bed a little longer with my eyes closed. During this period I was laying on my stomach thinking about my grandpa that had just recently passed away and how i wished I could see him again. All of the sudden I started feeling an intense energy course through my body. Then while my eyes were still closed I saw a vortex. It's kind of hard to explain, but the vortex seemed to pull my spirit out of my physical body (I openly embraced the vortex). It was really frightening at first but for some reason I knew I would be able to return to my body when I was ready. As I traveled further into the vortex I began to feel weightless, as If I were now pure energy disassociated from my physical body. The transition from physical to ethereal was like nothing I've ever felt before, pure ecstasy.  That's as far as I could get though. As much as I wish I could say I saw the astral realm I think I was too afraid to go too far from my physical body. I repeated the process of leaving my body about 3-4 times in the same session (probably lasted about ten minutes) All I had to do was imagine the vortex and I could achieve an OBE.

Has anyone else seen the vortex I described?

I always used to get a sort of vortex when I would AP.  I would describe it more like a black hole.  I would be pulled right into it.  These days I don't get that effect much anymore.  Now I just go from here to there without all the fanfare.  It was fun though.  I kinda miss it!

My first AP involved a swirling, grey vortex (tunnel/tornado whatever you'd like to call it).

I wonder if its appearance isn't just an initial, really obvious sign post to us newbies that 'you're about to go for a ride!'

Or perhaps with reading about others experiencing tunnels, we programmed ourselves to expect the same kind of exit.

Since I haven't seen the tunnel again in any later APs, I'm inclined to believe my first one was something like the AP beginners package.  :-D

I have and still do experience the Vortex effect often. In my opinion it has something to do with a energy field of sorts.

I often see Tornados/Vortexs. The Tornados have been used though as "board wipes" of a sort. Every time I experience one, the scene on the other side is completely altered. The vortexes a "doorway/portal" to another "level" possibly.

I experience these many times in my many "Hero Dream" scenarios.
