It does work...
Before going to sleep, tell yourself,(and be serious)That when my body falls asleep my conscious mind will awake. Or- When my astral body releases I will move my conscious mind into it and awaken at the ceiling.
It worked for me, after about four nights of telling myself this, I awoke at the ceiling one morning. It's interesting how the power of suggestion is. But be sincere and firm when telling this to yourself.

I read an account of something similar somewhere - can't remember where now.

But this happened to a skeptic - he went to sleep one night simply wishing he could go on vacation, then later, he woke up with vibrations and he projected. Apparently he floated down the road to a friends house, went in through the side of the house, got bored, and returned to his body And because he was a skeptic, he never tried again.

But pre-sleep suggestion/affirmation makes sense. All it is doing is to program your consciousness to enter a full wake induced projection, rather then the usual sleeping projection.

You could also consider Wake Induced Lucid Dreaming (WILD) - it is possible to take control of a Lucid Dream to the extent that you can convert it into an OBE.

Nate, hey you might as well! It worked for me anyway i was only half serious. anyway one thing that was holding me back was how relaxed i was. when they say 'body asleep, mind mind' it almost seems like it should be 'body asleep, mind almost asleep' hope that help if only a little bit
