strange noises during meditation

OK, this is weird. Yesterday night I did my relaxation and tried to project, but was probably just too tired, so couple times I started drifting off to sleep. Each time a strange sound woke me up. First time it was my mom`s voice saying: Why is he eating, daughter?"    What is the meaning of this phrase anyway. Not what is he (who?) eating, but why   (I spoke to my mom on the phone during the day, so maybe her voice remained freshly imprinted in my brain, why I heard it). Her voice sounded perfectly real, only a little bit muffled, as if she was speaking from within a barrel.

Next time It was a sound that reminded me of an electrical buzz or shock...bzzzzzzzzz....  Then finally, a cell phone kind of ringing again took me out of the hypnagogic state. What are these things? Am I hallucinating? I wear earplugs, so the sounds could not be real.

I don`t want to assume anything, but it sure feels like some spiritual entity is teasing me...or maybe helping me (?) by not letting me fall asleep??!!

When I meditate, I listen to whatever catchy tune is going through my head.

I know I'm getting somewhere when I hear the music as real sound, and not just 'mental noise'

I also hear other things: Sometimes noises, but mostly voices. I once even heard what sounded like a DJ commenting on the music I'd been listening to :)

As far as I can tell, from a lot of time spent examining the voices, they're creations of your own mind. Sometimes that's readily apparent as they match what you're thinking about. Other times it's less evident. I blame the dream mind at that point - the trance state is making you aware of the part of your mind that's responsible for creating dreams, and so you get things reflecting your thoughts like dreams do - very obliquely.

A nice example of when the voices and images were blatantly not related to anything I was thinking at the time, and blatantly internally-generated nonetheless, was when I spent a couple of weeks working my way thru the first three series of CSI, and every damn meditation sight and sound I encountered for a month was the cast of CSI :)

So, I doubt it's a spiritual entity - just typical trance symptoms. YMMV.

Hi Ivanda,

When I am doing Phasing, very often I will hear sounds, and somtimes music. This is when I get to the so called mind awake body asleep state. Once I'm phasing along, there will start to be colors, patterns and detailed images that appear. Yesterday, a beautiful pyramid came into view, much like our Astral Pulse Island (see that topic for more information) and I was rushing towards it with a rather fast sense of movement. Also at times sounds, sometimes very loud ones will occur, voices and music too.

That said, you may be in that state yourself. I would suggest reading some of the postings by the moderators in our new FAQ forum. There are topics there on OBE, AP and Phasing. You may find something that rings true for you in those posts.

All the best,
Nick

No need for worry. It's actually a very good sign. You just get conscious of something that is a natural part of your sleep.

While sleeping cells in the brain start to fire more in sync. For your brain it's noises or music - depending on the direction of your attention. Somehow your brain has got hooked on a new ability, that is, keeping your awareness on internal noises while you have reached the second stage of non-REM sleep. In this stage there many people hear bursts of some pressure/noise. When the noises become continuous you are ready to go OB.

You just happened to have been in a state you have never been before consciously. No entity will harm you. You have projected your fears of this state outwardly as a presence. You may try to continue to use earplugs from interrupted sleep and increase the noises to get this state again.

astralspinner,

nice--music! May I ask what music is it that u hear? I hear birds singing sometimes.  :)

I  remember that when I was at school I had a terrible old alarm clock that used to wake me very abruptly and scare sugars out of me. Every time it started ringing I would clearly hear people talking in my head--I actually heard different radio station switching.  I`m not sure if I was really tuning into radio   with my mind  or it was just a product of altered brain activity, but pretty interesting, isn`t it? Whatever I heard seemed very normal, not the fantastic things we see/hear during hypnagogic state.

Nick,

Thank you. I see some images too when completely relaxed. Sometimes a little scary, sometimes beautiful, but they lack the feeling of reality. The sounds I heard yesterday were totally real though.

upstream,

your post is very encouraging. I actually hope to hear more of these sounds! I enjoy the experience  :)

Quoteastralspinner,

Whatever tune happens to be going through my head before I start meditating -  yesterday it was "Paradise by the dashboard light" by Meatloaf, the day before it was "Jump" by the Pointer Sisters. If I get bored with the tune, I might try to change it. Jewel's a good one to switch to, especially "I'm sensitive" for some reason.

According to a few meditation experts, the part of the brain that generates dreams is always active, buzzing away below the surface & creating imagery and sounds. I've come to find that for myself: Whenever I get voices, imagery, or 'dreamlets' during trance, it's always like I'm tuning in to something that's already there, rather than seeing something that's just been created then and there.

If that IS what's happening, then it's a really good sign: Dreams are astral phenonmena, and you're reaching a state of consciousness where you're able to perceive dreams. Put in those terms, sounds liek you're pretty close, doesn't it? :)

WOOHOO!!!

Great! I will keep trying and will see what happens next.
