Interesting, why dont you go into more detail.

I try to imagine myself as if on a boat.  Moving with the waves.  I found it easier to imagine this, I don't know why exactly.

Like I said, I'm a newbie and don't have much experience yet.  So far I have tried this method about 20 times, including during the day, right before and after sleep, and in the middle of the night. I have been able to reach the vibrations stage every time with this method so far, but have not yet broken through.

Up until last night, most of my attemps were disrupted due to strange sounds that made me lose my concentration.  Early this morning I felt I was doing well, but someone yelled to me from outside my door and it startled me awake.  I was having my most intense vibrations yet, they were not at all sporadic, but rather they felt like strong pulses throughout my whole body.

I tried two more times late morning, but met with failure as I was unable to get my room dark enough and I found the use of blindfolds to be too distracting.  I have trouble trying to tune out my visuals when light keeps entering my field of vision.

I'm feeling pretty confident that when I attempt it later tonight when I'm fatigued and it's dark out that I may be successful.

Hehe, if I do, I'll be sure to jump out of bed and write about it afterward.  (May as well post it online as I like to write down dreams/lucid dreams.. figure I may as well write down all my OBEs as well, ya?)

Hearing odd, sometimes startling sounds is pretty common.  Do not let them distract you - just let them pass.   Many things will try to distract you, but do not be swayed.  Stay focused in your relaxation.

When the vibrations come, let the swaying turn into sinking down an infinite shaft.  It is only your imagination, so this is easy.  Surrender completely to the falling.  Falling is what it feels like when you AP, so this too will help.

Oh yeah, your very close. Those are sounds from the Astral. Your not exactly in the Astral but your connection with it becomes close when your close to AP'ing, thats why you can hear the sounds. It seems like a few Negs are up to no good [:)]

Haha, I think I didn't make something quite clear.  This morning it was my mother yelling to me about breakfast.

The other times, though, they were not real as far as I can tell.

Err, and by not real I mean not earthly, of course.  I wouldn't mean to presume that things I hear are not real.

Hi, it may sound strange but I also found this swaying method to work for me, Only I do it when I reach the vibrations point and I sway with my astral body - that's how I leave my body. I jump out of it by swaying in two directions, :)

I use the same type of thing to an extent. Its kind of like pretending you're having vibrations. And if you're relaxed deep enough the 'fake' feelings can be really effective in bringing on vibrations immediately. I use swaying to sides and up/down and also imagining some kind of spinning/twirling image and combine it with trying to feel myself rotating in a circle along with it. But that rotation can be really hard to force yourself to feel.

Hiya, I'm here and fairly new to OBE's in general.

I just wanted to share this little bit.

I've found the method that works best for me is to imagine that I'm swaying back and forth, up and down.  Just a little tip if anyone else like me was having difficulty feeling the rope.
