Greetings Blossom!
Yes, your assumptions are more or less correct.
All the hemi-sync does is alter your state of consciousness by speeding up or slowing down your barin waves by a small amount. The CD's are also supposed to synchronise the left and right hemispheres of the physical brain using bineural beats (or whatever the terminology is).
This, in an of itself does not get you to the Astral - it rather places you in a state of consciousness where it becomes easier - the brain in theta state has much better powers of visualisation. So having reached that state you still need to add the imagination and symbolism to enter the Astral proper, and that is what the Monroe CD's seem to do in total - with Focus 7 etc..
With these hemi-synch CD's, you are not having an OBE or Astral projection as such (in my opinion), but rather entering a state of meditation. Eventually you should be able to reach that stage and enter the Astral as a meditation, rather then having to rely on the CD's.
My opinion is that Astral meditation in this way is potentially much more useful than popular "OBE" for the reasons I mentioned before.
I hope that answers your questions in accordance with my views anyway.
With best regards,
Adrian.
Thank you for the answer. It was perfect and echoed my own thoughts more or less.
I appreciate it.

Just wanting to learn....
Hello Adrian..
I have a question for ya.
I have been reading about hemi-sync and focused states of consciousness that are achieved with these particular tapes.. I read your poll and did a search as I have not heard of this before. I hope you don't mind the question.
I realize from my reading tonight that hemi-sync alters the theta brains waves that we already have by changing the natural electrial waves and maintaining them in that state for a period of time. .. and thus is called focused.. Is that correct?
My question: How does the astral experience differ with focused consciousness IF one is successful? Or is that that the point of using this? To have a focused astral experience...
I am not sure what the difference of a focused astral experience would be vs a non focused astral experience..
Thanks, Blossom/Jennifer
