I read in a book that says that smoking can have negative effects on AP and meditation. But I am not sure where they got the info. From reading posts on several message boards people that smoke do not seem to have any problems. If smoking is causing physcial problems like trouble breathing then it may be harder to relax leading to more difficulty in projecting.

Smoking weakens the body, no doubt there... (the bitter truth) So yea, sure it affect your ability to astral project and do meditation.    The stronger "platform" you have to project from, the easier it will get (even though some really week and sick people seem to more often than average healthy people, project spontaneously), you probably could stay "out" longer, and the stronger (clearer) your experience will be.
Afterall, the physical body seems to generate the etheric body which in turn is responsible for energizing the "projecting double" (astral body if you will)...
As for meditation, the stronger the body you live in, its ability to focus, concentrate and relax will be higher.

So smoking and all other habits that weakens the physical body will lower your abilities, but most likely not to the degree where you can not for example project or meditate.  It will just make it harder and less effective.
