I wonder how they got out in the end.

"Hi my name is Doctor Rosenhan, and I've been conducting a pseudo-patient study, and I got in here by faking symptomns.  I'm not actually a scitzo."

"How are you today Dave?"

That just pisses me off really...I can understand why mental wards were created in the first place, to keep the "crazy" "safe", away from "normal" people.  But I'm surprised at all to find that the workers at the mental wards treated them like that... just goes to show what kind of heart they have.

This world is just so f'ed up it makes me sick, but i try to keep a positive outlook on it.

Ooopsie. I told my doc I've seen "lights". You know spirits or what ever you might call them... I wasn't labeld Scitzo. I also told her I've had dreams that has come true. I'm "labled" adhd and my doc said "That's pretty common in adhd-ppl"! *g* I wonder what else they've written in my papers! :o

My friend worked in a home for elderly ppl. There was some extras coming in to work over the night. My friend told them that they had an old lady there, she had alzhaimer's and was a bit disoriented. "She thinks she is the "boss" here." After that he went home. These two extras put that old woman to sleep in a bed and the lady was furious... she actually was the manager (she was 55 y o)! :D

Really, i didn't know that kids with ADHD had that ability...[?] Is there an explanation for this?

PS: your post was damn hard to make sense of...

Sorry. I have adhd and think much quicker than I write. What part did you not understand? :)

I have a friend who believes ppl with asperger and adhd haven't blocked the "paths" to our astral bodies as "normal" ppl. "Normal" ppl learn not to listen to your mind and only do as you are told and to believe only what you see. Many ppl who's recieved medication for adhd/autism loose their abilities to see auras and loose their creativity.

I didn't know what this was called until yesterday (lucid dreams and , OBE, auras and dream paralyze). I've done this since I was a kid and it's been normal for me!

That is bizarre and extremely messed up.  But I have to admit, I'm tempted to try faking symptoms.  All I have to do is tell my doctor that the other day I got rid of an evil spirit that was telling me mean things.
And Piupau, I have heard of people losing their creativity when put on psychiatric drugs.  It's so sad...

I don't judge ppl. I hear what ppl say and that's how we learn new stuff. I don't think we're ever fully educated. I don't say you are right, I don't say my friend tells me the truth. That was just her theory.

I don't know how it is where you live, but you can't go to a shrink here and say you hear voices and be hospitalized. They will check you up very good for weeks! THEN maybe you'll get a scitzo dx. Or maybe not. :)

holy reality

i sure could have used this article last semester :/

oh well..

if you fake yourself into a mental facility they will probably drug you, yes you can try and you know, hide the pill in your lip toward the back of your mouth, or under your tongue, and swallow the water... they might not notice...

but being put on anti-depressants might as well be like being put on heroin, it's not something you can just stop doing, without worrying about serious health problems... death... etc.

plus like the article said, if they diagnose you with something, that diagnosis sticks.... you know?

I applied for a job once and one of the questions on the application said "have you ever been admitted to a mental hospital?" I think it's really screwed up that they can ask that... is it even legal? I put yes... never got the job, but... I'm glad, it would have been at a horrible time in my life to have one in the first place...

I suppose if I acutally want a job in the future I'll just lie... I think my records are supposed to be sealed since I was a minor and it was not a long term stay.

and i'm not sure if i was ever diagnosed with anything... one doctor said i was mildly schizotypal... i suppose I might agree, based upon the solid definition itself.

but labels are largely useless and excessively punitive.

The explanation is that Doctors falsely diagnose these people with ADHD 90% of the time. They are just like you and me but they are given medication and told they have an illness because the doctor doesn't know how else to assist the patient.

Its their own ignorance and lack of medical knowledge that creates these stereotypes.

The adhd dx is WAY over dx'd. Mostly because school and parents want a calm kid because they can't handle their "energy". But there are those who really have it. Including me. I got my dx as an adult! I never "slowed down" when I grew up. No drugs work on me (including painkillers or sleepingpills or anything like that).

This classic research in the 1970s by Dr. David Rosenhan, a Stanford psychologist, illustrates this. Rosenhan and his associates had themselves voluntarily admitted as pseudo-patients. To gain entrance to mental hospitals, they faked symptoms. All twelve were admitted.
