(First I'd like to note that I haven't consiously projected yet, though I'm practicing.)
I was going through the process of getting ready to project. Before I started I knew something big would happen and I hoped that I would have my first projection that night, just a few weeks ago the first week of august. It came to the point that I started seeing images (you know, before your consious shuts down and your dreaming). I tried my hardest to stay awake, so I did, I was listening to my fan blowing and trying to notice subtle changes in my vision like dull sparks of light.
Then I wanted to see if I couldn't try to 'see' the astral realm. I don't know how it happened, but after awhile of using my eyes to look around the darkness my my eyelids to try and see changes of light, color came to view as well as the forms which were my wall and the curtains. I noticed I could see my room but in a different color and a little brighter. Then I wondered if my eyes were open, but somehow knew that they weren't. It was only a glimpse because it freaked me out so I forced my eyes open. When I did that, I was disappointed in myself. So I tried it again, but this time I didn't see my room.
Instead, I saw a creature with tentacles. Yet, strangely, I wasn't afraid and it was just floating there. I also noticed that everything else was sort of hazy and dark, all I could see was the creature. As I watched it's tentacles move, I decieded that maybe this wasn't a good idea and wanted to open my eyes. And thats when it screeched. It surprised me and my eyes flew open, yet still I wasn't afraid.
I actually laughed and spoke a few cuss words to this creature who prevented me from projecting. Sure, I was mad, but I was also humored. Something tells me that this creature was just messing with me and and isn't anything to be afraid of. But I still wonder...could it really do me harm? I wouldn't want to be the first person to die while projecting.
I just lay there for a few minutes and decieded to just go to sleep. As I was drifting off to sleep, the creature screeched again though this time I didn't see it. That P-d me off and I told it to go away. I guess it worked because I was able to go back to sleep.
I'm fairly sure you had what is called a "dweller on the threshold" experience, mainly caused by your energetic double partly projected, and taking a fanciful shape. I don't think you have anything to worry about.
Someone once reported a creature that wa a big block with tentacles, and it was pretty nasty although no noises. I imagine a lot of creatures that can float will look aquatic.
I've had this theory that the astral form is a sort of membrane that co-exists with the cellular form. Sometimes you can feel it move. I figure you could see with it if you can move its eyes out of your cellular eyes

I don't really remember if it was a block, I just remember the tenacles. Well it was my first experience with a being in the astral realm so I was pretty surprised. I have to ask though because your membrane theory confused me a little, what do you mean? I don't try and force anything though unless I'm impatient one night and I try to force myself out of my body. I'm not hsving sny success though.

No, I know that I didn't just imagine this. I was very much awake. I could hear my fan blowing and the wieght of my cover on me so I wasn't asleep. And how could I just imagine a creature like that that I have never seen before. And the sound? Eveyone in my house was asleep and there was no t.v. on. And also the screech seemed pretty close to me, like if someone yelled in your ear. The whole thing surprised me as well, I don't think my mind is that creative to make something up like that on the spot. It seemed very much real.
