All of it sounds familar. Of course, the more of this sort of thing you believe the harder it gets to project. When you consider case studies of spontaneous projections you will find that many of these "rules" are broken and yet it worked.

I agree with Tom in that believing in these conditions, creates barriers in your mind that are difficult to overcome.  If one wants to OBE of AP they need to think that it is very easy and natural, and not think that anything is required to achieve it, because many people have had spontaneous OBEs without even knowing what they are.  It all goes back to the old say, "If you believe you can achieve."

I don't think I believe any of them, except perhaps it is best to project sitting or lying down.

Though I suppose I can believe whatever I want, until I finally start having experience to back it up.

I remember reading or hearing that you can project anywhere or anyway you feel comfortable sleeping.  So if you can fall asleep anywhere anytime then you can project anywhere or anytime.

That I'd agree with. What I meant for my post to say was that I'd agree it's easiest to project lying down or sitting comfortably in the begin until you get some experience.

1. Atmospheric conditions should be dry and clear, and barometric conditions high.

- Well, it's easier to relax when you're comfortable, so this could help, I suppose...

2. Do not try to induce OBEs when the atmosphere is electrically charged. It is not wise to try to project during thunderstorms.

- Rubbish. Tho I suppose sudden claps of thunder might make it hard to relax :)

3. The temperature should be mild to warm, not less than 20 degrees below the normal temperature of the human body.

- Nice and comfortable, so it'd be helpful. I know I always like to be in a room that feels slightly over-warm when I start, as body temperature drops when you meditate, so a warm room can keep you from getting cold..

4. When attempting to induce an OBE, wear only loose clothing or none at all.

- Another "keep comfortable" one - it's not easy to relax if you're fidgeting or unable to concentrate on anything other than the squeeze your jeans are giving you...

5. Make the attempts in darkness or in only very dim light.

- Aids relaxation? I don't find light makes any difference myself..

6. Make the projection while you are alone.

- I find it hard to relax fully if I know people are going to keep talking to me.. but if I pretend I'm asleep then they don't bother, so that's fine :)

7. Ensure dead silence before the experiment begins, since any sudden or distracting noise might catch your attention and ruin your concentration.

- True when you're not good at concentrating I guess..

8. Conduct the trials late at night when sleep is most likely to supervene.

- NO! Late at night, you're most likely to fall asleep or be too tired to make an effort

9. It is best to sit or lie down completely. For optimal results, lie either on the right side or on the back. You should not lie on your left side.

- Well, it beats trying it standing up...

I think they're mostly not bad guidelines for helping to relax. I can't see how anyone could consider them rules tho..

Personally, this makes me not want to read books on projection written before the 90s. Are they all this bad?

Granted, I haven't had a conscious OBE yet, but I have no reason to believe any of that.
