Hi Aprilb, welcome to the forum ! I'm sure you'll find everyone here quite friendly and eager to answer questions.

As you're probably aware, vibrations / noises / being hurtled through space are very commonly reported symptoms of an OBE of some sort...William Buhlman's book "secrets of the soul" refers to his own survey of over 16,000 individuals. If you read through a couple of the many accounts, you'll find you are not alone.

As for your question :
"What were they exactly and how did they change from being so pleasant to being so frightening?"
hmmm...! I don't know the answer. But try reading Robert Monroe's books, "they" communicated with him a fair bit.

Also, perhaps "they" did not change and become frightening, but your perception of events did. For example, taking a rowing boat out on a summer's day is nothing like piloting a speedboat in the middle of the night(?) but its the same thing at the end of the day (??!).

Err..please excuse that poor attempt at metaphor ... Anyone else like to help me out here ?!
cheers
Mark

that's really interesting aprilb, because i went through exactly the same thing. I started having spontaneous obe's as in my early teens, and they were a bit strange but never really frightening. but for some reason when i got to be 16 or 17, the vibrations started to get really violent. I would be napping in the middle of the day and it would feel literally as if some demonic entity was trying to rip me out of my body. the more i fought the more powerful they would get. And then after high school it happened less and less often. Now for the last few years I've been trying so hard to have an obe but it happens pretty rarely, and when it does, the vibrations are very mild.

I think it's just part of a natural process. probably has to do with the lifestyle that age, and all the changes taking place in your body, etc. I seriously don't think there were any other entities or negative energies involved. You'll find a lot of info on the vibrations and other exit sensations on this website. Basically they are just symptoms of the fact you are phasing out of the physical and into the astral. If you just relax and go with them, they only last a few minutes and feel pretty good usually. But if you fight them after they've started enough to get some momentum, the fight will prolong the experience and they can possibly get frightening...

hope that helps

Albert

Welcome Aprilb
I too would suggest Monroe's books. He gives several accounts of being tested, animal-type things getting stuck to him, and he's one of the best to describe his experiences as clean as they were. Dr. Charles Tart was impressed by his work too.

. . .since I´ve considered anything esoteric or metaphysical like OBEs.  The fact is, as a teenager, I had a lot of lucid dreams, OBEs and past-life recalls.  Then, when I hit university, I sort of left all of that behind- not really intentionally but it just happened.  The other night, I came across an astrology web site and had my birth chart done.  It told me (among other things) that I am a deeply spiritual person and I thought "am I?"[;)] and from there I started wandering the internet and ended up at a reincarnation site and all sorts of things come flooding back.

One of the most important things that came back is how at the age of about 17, OBEs started to become frightening.  Up until this point, I had only pleasant experiences of leaving my body, seeing it in lying in bed and then basically going on a little trip through my neighbourhood and hometown.  If I tried too hard, I went back into my body.

At some point, I stopped having a choice in the matter.  I would hear and feel this huge vibration (either during a meditation or when I was sleeping or about to sleep)and then I would feel basically torn away from my body and more or less sent hurtling through space (this sounds very wierd to me but I assume you "regulars" are used to this sort of thing and don´t think I´m totally insane, right[:I]?).  I had no choice and no control and I was put back when "they" were done with me (I say they for lack of any better term, it´s just how I always felt it was best to describe it).  So, after this happened a couple of times, I started to fight when I felt the vibrations start.  And it was a fight.  I struggled to move any part of my body, keep my eyes open, say a word, take a deep breath- anything to keep grounded in the physical.  After a couple of years of this (on and off and it became less regular the more I fought)the experiences stopped.  Partially, I am very grateful.  But I am also very curious.  What were they exactly and how did they change from being so pleasant to being so frightening?

Thanks for any answers in advance!
