I think you pose a good question.  While I (and I think most of us here) have experienced dry spells, I always attributed mine to being a "focus" issue.

For example, most recent long dry spell seemed to be because of my busy lifestyle, planning my wedding, and dealing with problems on my website.  However, now that the website is back to normal, and I'm a married guy, I am having a LOT more success with my projections.  I just had two consecutive OBE's during the last two nights, so I'm off to a good start!

To answer your question though, I think desire has an extrememly important role in being successful with astral projection. For many people,  myself included, it's very difficult to lay down and immedietely project.  Usually there is some loss of consciousness before your awareness snaps you back and you find yourself phasing/exiting your body.  This loss of consciousness could span many hours, or just a couple of seconds.  However, without a strong desire to project, your mind would wander and you would forget WHY you wanted to project.  You would simply drift off into unconsciousness.

At least, this is my experience with desire as it relates to OBE's.  That's not to say that simply "wanting" one to happen is enough to get yourself out of the body.  Hell, if that were the case, every newbie who is learning about the subject would not have a hard time experiencing one.  I think the key is a strong desire, coupled with a open mind and a patient attitude.  Those three build a strong foundation for success.

For years, I learned about earth-related things and the complexity of my knowledge increased exponentially. But around high school or college it changed from exponential to linear. I was approaching the end of human knowledge. There was specialized knowledge I could learn, but it was still primitive compared to the exponential complexity I wanted. Its like if I was transported back in time hundreds or thousands of years (similar to: from astral to earth) and I learned how to make waterwheels to get mechanical power from rivers. I could spend all my life learning about specialized waterwheel knowledge or whatever else those people knew, but I could never program a computer or anything of that complexity. Then I found proof of astral projection, telekinesis, etc. That is the only kind of exponential complexity knowledge I can learn now. Everything else is primitive.

Beavis,

You gave an example of going back in time and compared what we have now to what we had then, in technology.  And you're saying that, as a comparison, ESP experiences are much more advanced or, how did you say it, the "kind of exponential complexity knowledge I can learn now", and that you can't learn anymore from Earthly human experience.  How the hell do you think we got to computers from water wheels?  Don't spread this kind of stuff man, and don't limit yourself.  It's very possible that ESP is our next frontier, and would expand our Earthly experience not just some esoteric "Astral World" experience.  It might sound as though I'm lashing out, but I believe you're making a mistake and I'm just in the mood to say something today.  Sorry.  No hard feelings...  please.

My reasons for obe/astral phasing relate to spiritual growth, and a curiosity about the non-physical realms. However our lifestyle, as Jeff Mash mentioned, can get busy with earthly matters. That is where I'm at now, and hence a 'dry' spell.

I do agree that desire and motivation are important in having a 'success' with astral work. The state of mind that we have definitely influences our progress in this regard (and other matters as well). Also, if a dry spell happens or motivation falls, keep in mind that it will eventually pass and results will start to occur again.

I should have said "exponential with a smaller exponent" instead of "linear".

kozzi [beavis said] that you can't learn anymore from Earthly human experience.

I didnt say that. I said the rate of learning is linear exponential with a smaller exponent, which is a lot slower than learning in astral. There is a curve of human knowledge and a curve of the complexity I'm able to learn, and during high school or college my curve passed the other curve so I'm now limited to the lower curve. Example: I could be learning about dna designs for fractal organisms, but humans havent learned much about that yet and they insist I learn the name of a city some shmuck dropped a bomb on 1000 years ago (or something equally worthless to me) instead.

How the hell do you think we got to computers from water wheels?

By many very slow increases of knowledge. Why "reinvent the wheel" when a lot of this stuff has already been done, but not here?

It's very possible that ESP is our next frontier, and would expand our Earthly experience not just some esoteric "Astral World" experience.

If thats earth's next frontier, tell me when the catch up to me, but I wont lag behind with them until then.

I think the reasons and desires are simple.  Our soul manifests who we really are, our true self.  I think that the reason so mahy desire to have an OBE so badly is because in doing so we get to "return home" (if you will) to a glimpse of the being and life that we knew before we came to earth.  Earth life is so struggling and difficult, and I believe our soul deeply misses the life we had before despite the necessity of our life here... and wants to return.

Hi all,

What are the reasons we wish to experience non-physical travel? Do our reasons and desires define our experiences?

I have been seeing alot of people wishing to experience this phenomenon. It occured to me that one's reasons and desires may indicate the level of success a person might have.

My reasons have changed over my lifetime. In the beginning i was simply curious. I desired to know the unknown. Find proof for myself that there was more that just the physical world. With this desire my OBE's started happening spontaneously.

I then entered a stage in my life when i wished to escape, death was more inviting that life. I fantasized about death, i longed to be released. My OBE's all but ceased. Not being able to will myself to leave, i turned and embraced my fears. Like magick, they vanished.

Now my desires are different again. I wish to consciously evolve. I wish to face all of my hidden fears, realise my inate divinity. My OBE's have started again. My level of control has increased, my self-discipline has increased. My desire to explore has never been so strong. I know i have begun a new chapter of my non-physical adventures.

It seems to me that desires influence the experience and outcome greatly. I'd be interested to know if anyone else has noticed this pattern in their own endeavours?
