I used to get that too.  I find it helps a lot if you tense up and release your muscles as hard as you can a few times before meditating.  It actually helps in general, not just with the twitching.  Try doing it with all your body parts at once, rather than just the legs/ankles.  If you already do this to relax your muscles, I'll try to think of something else that might help.

thanks, the second link posted on the thread you re-directed me to was especially helpful. Glad its nothin to worry about, but interesting theories on it.

I believe (and am not the only one) that the twitching is from your body getting closer to the body asleep/mind awake level and is just before , if not already at , the body asleep point.

If you get twitching again try to picture something that would make you flinch or take a quick action such as....   A cartoon blob creature just slung a large blob at you and your reaction would be to get outta the way real quick.

Or someone is pitchign a baseball at you and you have to swing at it..

I find that if I'm at the state where my body is twitching that when I visualize something like that, it tends to make my body jerk at the point where I try to make a reflexive action in the visualization. (I hope you understand that).

My problem is , once I'm at that point it simply keeps my body a little more awake than I need to and tends to break my trance that I worked for but its worth trying that little exercise to see if your limbs jerk once you create that visual in your head.  If it does make a hand jerk or a leg jump (sometimes different parts jerk to go along with the visual somehow) then to me it means I'm just really close to putting my body asleep.  The key after that is to just remain like you were and dont try to relax anymore or do any kind of moving around.. from that point on , keep your mind active with a visual you can get ready to exit from or some other way to not focus on your body anymore and you should get some kind of exit sensations.

I hope that helps. Good luck :)

That twitching should just be nerves firing off as the muscles relax for sleep, so if anything I would take those as a good sign, i know that when i get them it coinsides with me becoming more and more relaxed, and its usually about this time i lose feelings in my legs
