This question drives me mad as the TMI program approaches

Hello

I have a basic question and could not find a clear answer about this so far. I read someone saying  "no it's very unlikely", some people say "it does not matter". Here it is:

Have you ever projected (OBE/Phasing) in another body position than your natural sleeping position? Does it matter or not?

I'm going to join a program at the Monroe Institute this month and I understand that all exercises are supposed to be performed lying on the back (in the CHEC unit).

The fact is that for many years, way before I had concrete knowledge about OBE/Phasing, I enjoyed entering altered states of consciousness that I now know to be past Focus 10 (kind of 3D blackness, etc) while lying on the back. But I cannot fall asleep lying in this position (on my back), this seems just impossible. Now, every time I try to trigger an OBE/Phasing, I feel like being blocked in some way around the neck and shoulders. And I wonder if this is actually due to the fact that I am not lying in my natural sleeping position.

Conversely, when I try to do the same exercises lying in my natural sleeping position (face down), it does not feel natural for me to enter these states, I find myself not in an appropriate state, I just want to sleep. In some way, all these years imprinted something in my mind such as "lying on the back = meditation/exploration, lying face down = sleep"

On a last note, my two short OBE-like experiences were spontaneous and occurred in the middle of the night, e.g. while I was lying in my natural sleeping position.

Can someone answer about this question from your experience?
Of course, I would find it astonishing that people whose natural position is not lying on their back would encounter more difficulties to "cross the line". But I'm worrying a bit about this...

Many thanks for any clarification about this

Yours,
Eagle of Light

Hi Eagle of Light

I have projected on my back, front, left side and right side.  I have also projected from a 60 degree angle (my recliner chair).  My natural position for sleep used to be on either side, but I can now also sleep on my front or back.

I never used to be able to sleep if I lay on my back.  Knowing this, I came to the logical conclusion that lying on my back would surely induce an OBE, because I wouldn't fall asleep.  Over time and many many nights of practicing for an OBE, I fell asleep

I may be way wrong here, but I think you are imposing limitations on yourself.  If you are able to; forget totally about what position you are in.  If you can relax yourself to beyond Focus 10, then you should be practically unaware of what position your physical body is in anyway.  Is this not so?  In fact, you might even think that you are lay in a different position to that of your physical body - this is true for me.

Difficulties "crossing the line" come about when you impose difficulties upon yourself.  I'm sorry to harp on about it, but I've been learning this myself recently.  It doesn't matter a hoot what position you are in, what relaxation stage you are in, what mood you are in, etc., etc., etc.  It's about "letting it happen", whatever "it" is.  It's about allowing "it" to happen to yourself.

I used to think that a certain state of relaxation was necessary, but in the last couple of weeks, I have come to realise that my belief about relaxation limited my experiences, in that I only had experiences when I was very relaxed.  Once I realised this, I began to have experiences when I wasn't so relaxed.

Anyway, I digress.

I'm very envious about your forthcoming trip to TMI.  The one word I don't like about it that you use is the word "supposed", in that you are supposed to be lying on your back in the CHEC unit.  Please please discard the supposition and do what feels good for you.  Once you crawl into that CHEC unit, if you want to lie on your front - then do so.  I'm sure Bob Monroe would agree!  :)

Whatever, enjoy your TMI experience.  Have no expectations, try not to impose limitations upon yourself, and for goodness sake, tell us about it when you get back - please.  I'm seriously considering going one day, but I need to weigh up the cost and journey.  One day I will.  To crawl into a CHEC unit would be just fantastic!  I have a great respect for Robert Monroe and would love to visit "his" place.

I've only projected twice in my normal sleeping position. I usually find it works better from a position other than my sleeping position.

I think the reason you would lie on your back at TMI is because you have headphones on.
A certain degree of neurosis is of inestimable value as a drive, especially to a psychologist - Sigmund Freud

Stookie

I'm a side sleeper, and have never been able to sleep on my back. But when I meditate or use my Gateway CD's, I always lay on my back - with headphones on you have to. I've been doing this long enough to where it's programmed in my brain, like said:

"lying on the back = meditation/exploration, lying face down = sleep"

It's funny this came up because I had a strange experience last night. I've never had a lucid dream before, but in a dream last night I made a terrible decision and thought, "hey, this has GOT to be a dream. What around me can verify this". Immediately I noticed the environment was all wrong as to where I was supposed to be. Next thing I know, I woke up in bed, and I was lying on my back! Like I said, I've been a side sleeper my whole life, and I thought it was strange, with the dream and all.

Anyways, I'm sure the environment in those CHEC units are designed specifically for what your worried about. You're not supposed to fall asleep in them. That's what the Gateway program is about - helping you get around these obstacles. I'm sure they've run into these questions several times before, and can tell you exactly how to fix it.

I'm envious - If I had the cash...

Eagle of Light

Hello

Thank you for sharing, it does relieve me  :P  I was worrying about this with the incoming workshop...  As said mactombs, I said we are supposed to lie on the back because of the headphones.

If I understand correctly, the fact I cannot fall asleep may actually help! Anyway, you're right, I'm just gonna stop thinking about this and let it happen.

QuoteWhatever, enjoy your TMI experience. Have no expectations, try not to impose limitations upon yourself, and for goodness sake, tell us about it when you get back - please
Got it! The Gateway Voyage takes place on 15th October until 21th in Virginia. Of course I'll start a new thread when I come back to share my experience with you all.

Nice experience Stookie, I envy your lucid dream. I don't know if you had read about my last thread, last month I had set up a 30-days objective to have a lucid dream. I eventually kept it running for 15 days, before being messed up with daily concerns. Well, If you know me, you know it's already a good achievement!   The result on these 15 days is 2 very short OBE-like experiences (with lucidity about the fact I was dreaming) and 1 reality-check in a dream. But not a complete lucid dream in which you fully interact with the environment. I'll set up another training later because I'm convinced that LD can really help.

Thank you again for your replies!

Yours,
Eagle of Light

I just wanted to clarify something.  The CHECK unit is designed so you actually don't NEED to use the headphones.  There is a speaker on each side and you can just listen to the speakers without the headphones.

I had a problem falling asleep while at Monroe and they suggested that I sit up.  I did sit up sometimes, but I still preferred the headphones.

The one thing you definitely don't need to worry about at Monroe is anyone telling you that you need to do something in a specific way.  These experiences are extremely personal and there's no right and wrong way to get there.

Now, if I could only make some progress......

I know you'll love your Monroe experience.

You've just blown away the most fundamental precept from Bruce, and everyone else, i.e you must be able to relax before anything happens..

Oh great thanks!!!

I exit my body like 4 times, 2 times on back, 2 on my stomach.

I find I feel the vibrations more on my back, where as on my stomach I just side out.

I cant sleep on my back. I cant even get comfortable . I get to stiff.

Hi Billion

So if I now said that the only way to project is by standing on your head, you'd spend the rest of your life practicing by standing on your head then?

All I meant was that I used to think that I had to be really really relaxed to get anywhere - I mean to the point of practically falling asleep.  And normally, I'd fall asleep in the process  :)

But, lately, as I've been relaxing, I've heard sounds that are not physical and seen mental images and so on, while I've been at those beginning stages of relaxation and far more wide awake than I ever have been before.

So I do still agree that relaxation is important, but my point was that I was placing too much importance on it.  Placing too much importance on any one thing can hinder progress, in my opinion.  That's what I was getting at.

Hope I've cleared that up.  :)

Hello

Giselle, thanks a lot for this information!
Actually, there's a picture of a woman lying on her back and wearing headphones on the institute leaflet, and I saw no mention about the possibilities you talked about. That's good indeed that these possibilities exist. Anyway, I'm sure they will explain all this to us.

Selski, it seems to me that I've read somewhere a post from Frank that agrees with what you're saying on relaxation. There seems to be some logic because when you're thinking about relaxation you're focusing on your body in some way, so...  That might be a balance to find.
The act of resisting a thing is the act of granting it life. The more you resist, the more you make it real - whatever it is you are resisting.

Nobody can prove their OBE experiences. I've had success with the Gateway Hemi-sync, so I'm sure the program has got to have it's benefits for some. However, if nothing happened after spending that much money, I could see how someone would be inclined to lie about it.

I wonder what percentage of people continue to OBE after going to TMI?

Still, confusing, you mean there is a specific level of relaxation that is enough, you don't need to go overboard? right?

if that's the case can you describe when you were over relaxing,
and what level of relaxation is enough?

Is there any way to gauge level of relaxation?

Stookie

QuoteStill, confusing, you mean there is a specific level of relaxation that is enough, you don't need to go overboard? right?

When I started, relaxation was probably the most important thing for me. I had to put much of my attention (or lack of attention) into being able to relax.

Now, the more that I get into focus 10, the more my body does the relaxation itself. I don't have to worry about it as much, and instead put my attention towards focus 10 and away from my body. I had an OBE where I was very aware out of body, but could still sense my physical body. I remember moving my tongue around a little and realizing I still had a little control over my physical body. I don't think I was totally asleep, which confused me with the "mind awake, body asleep" phrase.

I was reading something recently by Bruce Moen, where he said he's nearly always aware of his physical body during an OBE. He said that's just the way it's always been for him.

Thanks. I'm sure that in all cases I will enjoy the adventure that I'm about to share with like-minded people and an experienced teaching team!

From my point of view there is nothing about success or failure, only experience. Unless you come with a specific goal that you want to achieve within the duration of the program.
As TMI clearly states, the Gateway Voyage program is not designed to make you have a successful OBE but instead to give you tools to explore altered states of consciousness. Learning how to shift consciousness has many useful applications such as energy healing, channeling,..., that can greatly enlighten people lives. I believe that effects can manifest during the week but as well later afterward, in more or less conscious ways. This is certainly not easy to objectively evaluate how the training is effective for oneself, and even less for our fellow explorers. Bruce Moen, for example, had great time with Gateway Voyage yet made the choice to repeat the Lifeline program three times.

Well, it's coming soon  :P

Hi Eagle!
I did my Gateway last March, then I did Laberge's 10 day Dreamcamp in Hawaii in July (he's the Monroe equivalent to LD'ing; Stanford researcher last 25 yrs for LD and scientific proof etc)

I posted here on my experience, you can do a word search (Gateway) if you want :)

For me, the biggest lesson I learned to ensure a 'successful' experience, was "Effortless Intention". Selski tipped on this too. If you 'think' too much, you are analyzing, thus imposing limitations on yourself. Just sit back and Enjoy what is about to happen...have the Intention that something will happen as opposed to having an Expectation that something will happen.

ALSO:  saying most of these people must be BULLSHITTING their experience...I have 2 words: BRUCE MOEN!
READ HIS BOOK!!!!
Actually, that looks like I am saying Moen is a bull$hitter....NO, just the opposite!
My husband went with me to Gateway and we Both had a verrrrry quiet experience Until the last day!
He had one hell of an LD, and even a partial OBE during the LD, and I...well, it was a very personal journey. I even had a 'byproduct' and I am completing a novel as we speak (I even received the sequal this summer using hemisync!)

Yes, during Gateway, Everyone else was having all of these wild and outlandish experiences...and we were just listening to the tapes it seemed...we were getting a 'little' anxious, yes it is a lot of $$$. But one of my trainers shared her experience (Gateway) and told us that hers was basically so quiet, and really nothing "happened". But somehow she knew that "that" was meant for her. She kept the confidence and attended Lifeline next, and had the doors blown off. She is now one of the most active trainers in the program! She told us to just keep practicing and let go, have FUN! (Effortless intentions)..we were 'trying' too hard; and Tim was analyzing too much, and when something did happen, he poo-pooed it as, 'oh, that HAD to have been my stupid imagination...!"

I encourage anyone with doubts about Monroe, or any of this OBE stuff, to  read Moen's "Voyages Into The Unknown". He details how Nothing happened to him thru some of his TMI visits and originally thought it was all a load of bull and horse and cow and pig....
but then things began to change, and look where he is now!
His book literally kept my husband in the 'loop' to continue with Hemisync and exploring other realms!

OK, sorry for being longwinded, but this stuff 'sends' me!  :D

I would also encourage you to  read up on anything Monroe and FOCUS level related in the Permanent topics...it helped me, and still helps me to this day.

Also, I did have and LD and OBE at Gateway...but it was during a Break and I went for a much needed combat-nap!!! hahaha! (I posted that here too)

I will be glad to tell you more if you want.
Just remember, Gateway, and all the TMI programs, are not structured, not tailored. Each individual will have to discover their Own purpose and journey!
(I wasn't into the space exploration and wild excursions...mine was purely searching "within") ...and I got more than my $$$ worth.

Attitude...Attitude...Attitude!

I am planning in Guidelines this spring.

have FUN!
ofp :D

PS:
In your CHEC unit, you can sit or lie how you want. I cannot lie on my back due to injuries and broken bones! I took with me a 4 inch pad of foam and cut out the center. This allowed me to lie on my side and were the headphones comfortably as well.  I have to do this anytime I listen to hemisync anyway, unless I sit upright in a soft cushy chair. I asked for about 3 more pillows and was accomodated nicely! I had quite a nest in my CHEC unit!!!

Thanks for your post, it energizes me  :P

I have to go right now (I go back to France before the US with no online access), i have just enough time to let you know I got your post and appreciated it.

See you soon for the sharing of my experience there!

Eagle,

I know you won't see this until you get back, but you definitely have the right attitude and I can't wait to hear all about it.

As a side note, I have still not had an OBE of any kind.  My Gateway experience was quietly enjoyable.  It was one of the few times I was able to reach the black void, which I have not done but a couple of times since.   I had no personal experiences at Lifelines, BUT some of the things that happened around me with others were mind boggling.  And, you'd have to have been there to know without a doubt, as I do, that these people were NOT Bull***.  I will admit there were one or two people at each program that I more or less doubted, but that's to be expected anywhere.

I fully intend to go to Monroe again.

On the subject of relaxation, I think it is important to be able to clear your mind, not necessarily relax.  I feel that one of my biggest obstacles keeping me from having any type of meaningful experience is that I have extreme difficulty in quieting my mind.  During my Gateway program, where I feel I made more progress than at any time since, my personal life was in a more tranquil state and I was able to keep outside thoughts away much easier.  I'm a worrier by nature and when I settle down, I seem to rehash everything that is going on at the moment.  I'm either so focused on keeping the thoughts away or I finally give up and fall asleep.

So, if anyone has any suggestion on how to quiet the mind, I'd love to hear them.  I've tried most of the things I've read...counting breaths, just noticing, etc.  but before long I realize that I'm right in the middle of working through a problem of some sort and don't even realize I've been doing it.

Giselle

oilfieldpilot

Giselle,

I know about the "shut-up already!" trying to get your chatterbox to Hush so you can focus!

This was my first problem I had to overcome at gateway. I was a Silva mind control practitioner for 15 yrs prior, and all of that is very Active visualization!
So when I realized I needed to shut up and LET things happen, this was how I got my chatterbox to stop yaking.

Whether I do the Full scale rundown (the Energy conversion box, etc...) or not, when I first close my eyes and start my phasing, or even going to dreamland, I mentally visualize on the RIGHT side of my brain, a big light switch. This light switch, (make it as realistic as possible) turns On and Off your LEFT brain. Notice it is on the wall of your Right brain...this makes you 'think' that your Right brain is in control of your Left half.
I reach up and Turn OFF the switch, and then mentally visualize a circuit being traced back to my left brain and being cut off. Then, I vivuslize the chatterbox left side being folded up, decommissioned, put out of service, whatever..., and then it just floats away into the distance and darkness(much like closing a Window on your computer...it just wisps away, but you know it still lurks out there somewhere, waiting quietly and invisibly until you retrieve it). The key is to make this all Verrrry realistic!

I shared this with others at Gateway who had the same problem. They were astonished how well it worked once you had a concise system down, and you repeated it Exactly the same, each and every time you did it.

Hope this helps!

I also use this to stop a stupid song that is stuck in my head!
:D

Quote from: GiselleEagle,
I know you won't see this until you get back, but you definitely have the right attitude and I can't wait to hear all about it.

Hello!  I'm back! I came back yesterday from Virginia.

I had a WONDERFUL week at TMI. The place is beautiful and filled with love and light. The staff is welcoming until the very end of the program. I met amazing fellow explorers who became new friends. The teaching team is great, gave us space to share and provided assistance without intruding into our personal experiences. Also, the program contents includes along with the tapes some interesting and funny surprises/demos.

I will go back there for another program, no doubt about this!

Now, about the right attitude you talked about, well, I must admit it did not last long for me

The first two days, I really had the right attitude. I relaxed and remained curious about what was going on, yet a bit anxious about the idea that I could be "the one who experiences nothing" (btw, there was no such person). At the very first tape, I noticed that the internal images I got were vivid in comparison with my training at home with the Wave I CD. Also, I felt very relieved as I joined the conference room, because I really connected to the experience and to guidance!
I will not enter into specifics about my experiences because I know now how much this is important that you remain away from expectations and that you "find out for yourself" as Bob Monroe loves to say. I just want to highlight some points for people intending to join the program.

The fact is that as soon as I realized that I was indeed capable to have these experiences, excitation built up amazingly. I began to think "I'm capable!!! I can have these experiences!" which quickly turned into "I'm going to have an OBE this week! I'm sure that I'm going to have an OBE this week!". So, despite the teachers recommendations, I soon found myself trying to trigger an OBE during the following tapes. I would follow the flow the first minutes but as soon as I had the feeling that I was phasing into the internal imagery, I would deliberately try to "push with my mind" in an attempt to go out and to feel separation from my body . This greatly impaired the next experiences. Oftentimes I caught myself far to be relaxed, especially around the head... I began to feel disappointed and anxious.
During one tape, I asked for guidance about why I was no more enjoying fully the new experiences. I then immediately got a very funny picture which shows how much guidance can be humorous: I clearly saw an insect, leaned forward, desperately trying to fly through a bush almost as big as his body, its wing half locked into the leafs!    Indeed, this is exactly what I was doing...

So, I relaxed more and finally was able to get in touch again with the experiences.

So, please, if you intend to join Gateway Voyage, follow the golden rule:
set your intention, then relax, relax, relax. Forget your body. Just observe, be curious and DO NOT try to trigger an OBE. Enjoy, have fun and follow the White Rabbit.......
As soon as I followed him again, I sometimes found myself shortly phasing into a vivid imagery, with relief and joy.

Gateway Voyage mentions that OBE is only a part of the program and now, with the various and fun exercises we did, I do understand why. This program is amazing and I do recommend it to you.

From my point of view, I think I was inspired in my last post as I said that the effectiveness of the program is certainly not easy to objectively evaluate. OK I did not get The Great OBE I desired so much. Yet I'm happy, so happy. I do feel change within me. What changed? I don't really know. There is just a deep feeling within me that I need to explore. What I know for certain is that I got new friends and tools to explore further and find out what comes next.

I will end this post with an anecdote: on my trip back to home, I missed my flight connection due to a 1h30 delay of the Charlottesville flight (little tip, be careful with that because I was said it happens quite often). So I had to stay at an hotel. On the way, I met a very gentle woman who missed as well her connection for another flight.
The following day, I had to wait a loooong time at the airport. I sat down at a gate close to my gate where there was plenty of space available. Shortly after, a guy came and sat just behind me and began to work on his laptop. Grrrr, I just wanted to remain away from computers! So I stood up and went to the other side of the gate to find another seat and... there was the woman! We both displayed a large smile. We got to know each other and I felt that she was relieved (so did I). Actually, she was very anxious about the event and after some time incidentally told me that she wept at the hotel [EDIT: wept, not swept - lol]. We were happy that we met again and spend these long hours together. She explained to me that her husband died very recently (she's much older than I am). She told me about very happy moments she had with her husband, and I could feel her sadness. I felt "attuned" with her. I just said that I was convinced that now her husband was in great peace and happy. I also noticed an even greater motivation in me to join the Lifeline program that may help in making the connection with a deceased person. She showed me two pictures of her family. Looking at one picture of a member of her family, I silently thought "What's his name?" (I was hesitating to ask directly, I don't know why). I immediately received a name in my mind. I turned to the woman and said "This is...?" and she replied, giving the name I had in mind!!!  I was very astonished   How did I guess the name?
Countless hours later, I finally thank her for the great time as her plane was ready for boarding, went to my gate and eventually joined my plane. I arrived at my seat, sat down and began to talk with my fellow traveler, a man again much older than I am. A very calm and friendly person. He asked me why I came in the US and I decided to tell him about my training to the Institute, expecting that he would do this you-need-a-therapist look at me    Surprisingly, it was all the contrary. He was very interested about this and wanted me to tell more about it. He told me that when he was younger, he had a weird experience: he was chatting with a friend then suddenly found himself at the ceiling, watching his body below and promptly snapped back! He said he never knew what it was! So we had very nice conversation about this. He told me as well that in his company, employees have to engage in sessions designed to improve work relationships. Part of the program is about realizing how thoughts can affect people and that mind has indeed some power. They did some experience that concretely demonstrates the power of imagination and intent... Amazing.

Is this only chance that led me to meet these 2 persons..? I just notice that this happened.
So, what I want to convey here is that I believe the effects of the program may go beyond what we first expect.

Hope you enjoyed my sharing about my experience at TMI.

Yours,
Eagle of Light

Awesome! I'm glad you had a good experience and learned some things. It sounds like you came away with a new perspective.
It's very encouraging.

Hi Eagle

Thank you so much for coming back to us with your adventure.  It sounds wonderful.  I particular like the insect experience.

"The Great OBE" - maybe you'll come to the conclusion that you don't really need to experience it?  And perhaps when you reach that conclusion, you'll have your first OBE - it has been known... :dancing:

Anyway, good to hear you enjoyed yourself.

Sarah

PS  You didn't even mention the headphones in the CHEC unit - how was it?

Eagle of Light

Hello!

I'm happy that you enjoyed it, this was definitely a nice experience for me.

Yes, Stookie, that's exactly it: a different perspective.

Sarah, about the insect experience, I can tell you I felt kinda stupid when I realized I was the (big) insect. What I was trying to do was depicted in such a relevant and humorous way!...

The Great OBE will probably come when I learn to relax even more and stop "pushing". Just do nothing and observe. This is probably the best lesson of the week yet ironically the most difficult aspect of the experience. Or maybe I don't really need to experience it as you say. I remember that Bruce Moen did very few OBE and do not consider it as a prerequisite to explore Afterlife. The fact is that I'm really interested in Lifeline.

You ask about the headphones: Giselle is right, there is no restriction, you can choose any position that is best comfortable. Also, there are speakers in addition to headphones so you can remove headphones. I decided to lay down on my back and keep headphones. At one occasion, I felt a bit tired of laying down so decided to sit down, the back supported by cushions; this was good as well and could stay in touch with the experience.

Yours,
Eagle of Light

I really think you should make a new post...I missed this and had to do do a search for it after you PM'ed me!

Please POST a New topic Titled something like :MY Return from TMI: Gateway!

and let's stir up some more conversation about YOUR experience!

I am really happy for you. This forum definately needs a TON of credit to help those who want to do more than merely exist, as well as prepare you for TMI programs! Bar None!

I know you are still miles above cloud '9'...
