I have been LD'ing/OOB'ing for many years now and in all that time I have been very prone to body twitching, when falling asleep.  I think this is due to various different factors.  Some authors (eg Sylvan Muldoon) have suggested that a vigorous body twitch whilst falling asleep is caused by the sudden re-interiorisation of the double, possibly caused by some noise, physical disturbance, unconscious thought etc.  As the double slams back into the physical it causes the body to jerk.

I think other causes are (i) neurological and (ii) the physical body acting out an evolving dream scene.  I have MANY times observed parts of my body "twitching" during the onset of a dream.  For instance I once began to dream I was using a screwdriver to twist a screw into a wall with my right hand, and as this dream began, my physical right hand twisted in perfect correspondence with the dream action.  This sort of twitch has happened many times to me.  It happens because the physical body falls asleep "slower" than the mind does, and is not fully paralysed as we begin to dream.  I also experience twitches for no apparent reason, whilst dropping off to sleep.  It's a mystery to me.
