APJEFF

Hi my name is Jeff and I am pretty much BRAND NEW to AP. I have Ap'd only once, and it wasn't on purpose. I have only one question hopefully one of you veterans can help. I am having trouble with self inducing sleep paralysis, our body has to fall asleep before our minds correct? Can somebody please help me with tip on self inducing sleep paralysis and what I should do after I get to this point. Thank you
-Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Welcome to the Astral Pulse.

The trick is to keep your mind busy and active, focused AWAY from anything to do with your physical body... then allow your body to relax.  :)

Xanth, is SP literally PARALYSIS? as in you physically wont be able to move?

I've layed down for 30 minutes+ never once thinking about my body - and I definitely do forget about it and start concentrating on random images/daydreams. That's as far as it goes. I could move if I needed to though. I just dont think about it. What do you do from here?

Is this where you can get to Jeff, where you forget about your body, but are probably not actually in SP?

As PR pointed out with that thread (you should read the entire thing, it's a good read)...
The term that most people point to "Mind Awake/Body Asleep" (MABA, or the "Trance State") is what people are ACTUALLY referring to when they say "sleep paralysis".

And now for the shocker... you can not INDUCE Sleep Paralysis.  You can, however, induce the MABA/Trance state.
Let's go a bit into what sleep paralysis is.  Sleep paralysis is a malfunction of the sleep atonia function that paralyzes your physical body so you don't "act out" your dreams.  The malfunction comes upon waking, where the atonia is supposed to "turn off" JUST before you wake... but in the case of SP, it doesn't and you wake up and find that your body is paralyzed.  This isn't something you can "induce".

Now, the other kicker here is the "Body Asleep" part of the Mind awake/Body asleep thing...
If you're going for a conscious exits, you DO NOT need to put your body to sleep.  Sure, there might be times when your body does fall asleep on you... and that's perfectly fine, but there are going to be times when you can still fully move your physical body, yet you'll find yourself projecting.

Major Tom's Focus 10 article spells it out beautifully: http://www.astralpulse.com/forums/welcome_to_permanent_astral_topics/focus_10_mind_awakebody_asleep-t24783.0.html

Thanks for the links Xanth and PR, I've read through Tom's post and it is full of solid information. I think I know what I'm doing wrong. I just need to put it in practice :)

I have to disagree with this comment.  Sleep paralysis is different from a trance state.  I can get into a trance state by doing breathing tech, but I can't get into a sleep paralysis state by meditating.

I usually wake up in SP and feel weighed down.  This is what many ppl out there experience and think that someone is holding them down or they are being abducted.  Wiggling a toe usually will break the SP a lot faster than freaking out.   Breaking a trance state is no more harder than breathing.

Trance and Sleep Paralysis are two different things, brought on by two different scenarios.  I know we had a thread around here some where that was discussing this, I just wanted to make my opinion known on this thread.   :-)

That's actually the exact point I was trying to make, Nay.  Thank you for clarifying. :)

I thought you were saying that it was preferable to think a trance was SP.
