why do some techniques require you to sleep then wake up then sleep again?

Many techniques require you go to bed then wake up then go to bed again and attempt a technique somehow. Is the reason for this because lucid dreams happen more during the later stage of sleep which increases the chances of having one and projecting from one?

Your body has recharged lots and doesn't need to sleep so urgently. You are also in the perfect state to project the instant you wake. Its also a better time as you're unlikely to be disturbed if that problem applies.
Basically you're half way there without doing anything.
More people have their first success this way by far and this backs up why.
There's far more where the eye can't see.
Close your eyes and open your mind.

right so is it actually when you are asleep in the second half that people have most success you mean? due to more lucid dreaming etc.

You are more likely to have a lucid dream in the morning hours rather than when your tired body needs sleep. It's easier to stay alert when you're not tired and this helps to become aware in a dream.
Take 20% off the time you'd normally sleep and set an alarm. When you wake, get out of bed and have a drink of water or similar. After 10 mins or so you go back to bed and fall asleep again. This will be different from your initial sleep in you are more alert and stay aware longer in the sleep cycle. A few thoughts of a familiar safe place could be enough for you to dream you're there. You then become fully aware of the situation and can take full control.

It's to do with the sleep cycle and waking up before you enter REM... slow wave sleep... starts... in... Oh never mind... it'll fall on deaf ears anyway.
