So do dream characters have any purpose do you think?  Every time I challenge a dream character, I get an angry stare as if I'm not supposed to be speaking to them or as if there going to get into trouble if they speak with me and straight away I can feel myself starting to phase out and wake up.  Do they know something that we don't perhaps?  There was one time when I managed to talk to this old guy but that was a one off.  What baffles me is when I've never even seen the person in my waking life and a lot of them tend to have there own personality.  I also wonder what I look like to them.  Once when I had an OBE and looked in the mirror, my eyes where all white and rolled back and I noticed I was floating about a foot off the ground.

I think that a lot of the time our dream characters are aspects of ourselves that our conscious mind can't deal with normally. Your subconscious creates another "personality" in the dream and you can confront it in a way you normally avoid. If they are stand-offish, it probably your own fear and means you need to pry it out of them to confront it. Lots of the people in my dreams are very obviously an aspect of myself after analyzing it in context with the topic of the dream.
