I do this sometimes. I sit indian style on a cold concrete floor, and I listen to "snow" from a radio. I try not to let my mind think. Thats the hardest.

I have also used the radio snow technique.  It helps to keep the mind on one thing.  Keeping the mind clear is my goal in meditation, but it's much easier said then done.  I find breath awareness is also quite useful.

That radio snow techniq! That may even not be a really bad idea! I'm gonnan try it too! :-)

When I meditate, I prefer the morning because in the mornigs you mind is more clear comparing with you mind in the afternoon.
Than I actually do the same as you PyproPsion69 only I haven't got to the point were I almost leave my body.
U know...I'm what they call a noob :-)

I start by laying down and let my body relax. After i travel with my mind to every part of my body to keep my mind in control, becuase i have many thoughts that time in my mind.
After i start to say I FLY I FLY I FLY all the time with the intence to be concetrate on that though and block any other and after half hour or 1 hour my mind get's really slow and calm.
My thought becomes III FFFLLYYY... I feel a iner peace and silence and my body numb ofcuarse.
Then i hope that i will leave my body..but it's not easy for newbies like me [:D]

Yes use it and tell us how you turn out.

Thats a good idea, using radio static. I used to have a HEPA filter which makes a lot of white noise but I moved that to the basement. It would help with that stupid annoying song that always gets stuck in my head whenever I start. I tried this new tecnique where you visualize a ball of energy absorbing all the random thoughts in my head, only problem is that once you stop concentrating the songs come back, grrr! Any other cool tecniques?

Visulize you on a train. All your thought pass by very fast. You only remember the "surface" thought of the specific thoughts.

There are different meditation techniques. What I do is vipassana meditation. It's an old style used by the buddha I was told. Observe the breathing, don't do anything else.
The point is, what are you meditating for? If you meditate to get  wisedom, understanding, enlightment, then the techniques you guys use, I think are not very usefull. If you try to get an Obe, then your techniques might help to calm the mind.

I use breathing awareness.  Just be aware of your breathing, if any thoughts come let them pass, and go back to being aware of your breath.  When you first start it may be helpful to think IN on the in breath and OUT on the outbreath.

There is not really anything you're supposed to 'do' persay.  If your goal is to have an OBE or to reach trance, then you can attempt that.  You should pick up a book on meditation, I'm not sure if you understand the purpose (no offense intended).

I used it today, but if I'm honest, I didn't find it a techniq for me. But I think everybody must develop and try his/her own u know.
The reason that techniq didn't really work out with me was because...I found the sound after 15 minutes anoying. But that could also be a result of me letting my thinking mind take over, and that's when I stopped.
So I'm gonna try it again...

Well you have to have a positive attitude towards it. Im not saying you do not, you just have to look forward to doing it.

And you are correct about making your own tech's. I found the radio snow tech. my self. I always use it for relaxation and trance inducing.

I myself am use to the snow from the radio. I listen to A.M. every night and I love it. So im use to the radio snow, maby that is why it works for me!

So give it another shot but look forward to it and keep a positive attitude.

i use breath awareness,  its the  most logical one for me to use,  its too bad i smoke though.
Its  usually with my eyes closed  but when  I meditate with them open i usually  gaze at a small  statue of the meditating buddha, it radiates a serenity that  constantly reminds me of what im trying to realize.

A useful tip i think is to deliberatly allow  your mind to wander when meditating,  but watch it, be aware  of  your mind NOT being still, KNOW that you are not meditating, be consious that you are in a train of thoughts...
after youv been thinking for  a  while  about any randomness start  to focus it again on whatever it is  you focus on,  this  way  you  see the parrallel between a thinking and meditating mind- which IMO and experience trains  your mind to be more receptive to its own  subtle workings.

As  soon as you begin  focusing again after consciously thinking you may notice the dramatic  shift from being not very conscious  to  very conscious.

My first post - how exciting. I find for me the best meditation is when I try and step out of my mind so Im kind of just feeling with my soul - and not with words. I find that even though you may be only concentrating on breathing you are still experiencing much but not in a word form - like a kind of journey where you are only ever experiencing the present. The way I usually start is to concentrate on trying to tap energy from the cosmos - I personally like the sounds of nature to meditate to - especially thunderstorms, I think radio static and white noise is a bit too chaotic to aid meditational purposes.

Hi all! I'm rather new here but I've been meditating for quite a while. As someone said there's as many meditation techniques as there are people. I think it's a good thing to start out with deciding what you want to accomplish. Me, I want to be able to experience the world as it is, here and now, to be able to really experience the moment as it is.

When I meditate I just listen. Listen and take in everything that's going on around me and inside of me. The first ten or twenty minutes (sometimes longer, sometimes shorter) are usually filled with surface thoughts, worries and fantasies. I try to just notice them and then let them be. After a while things quiet down and if I'm lucky I reach a mindset where no thoughts are popping up and I'm free to just feel. And that's exactly what I want to do. So I stay there happily until my timer tells me that I've been meditating for whatever length of time I set out to meditate.

I try to meditate three times a day. After my morning yoga (before breakfast), before having dinner and before I go to sleep. Some days I don't have time (or don't take time would probably be better wording) but I try to meditate at least once a day. When I don't meditate for a couple of days and then do it I really realise the difference between meditating days and the ones without. I'm lucky to be a university student with a lot of free time! :)

Well, hope this made sense. It's rather late and I should be in bed already.

Peace.

I feel so noobish posting this question, but from searches I've only been able to get bits in pieces. I want to know what most people do when they meditate, what kind of excercises they do, when/how often they meditate, just write your mind out. For me, I usually mediate at night because on weekdays thats the only time I have. I start by relaxing, slowing my breathing rate, and trying to cut down as many loose thoughts as I can. Then I usually let energy flow all over my body, it helps get me relaxed. I go through and balance and energize each chakra one by one. Then, I am not really sure what to do after there, sometimes I get in a scattered OBE attempt and end up making myself fall alseep. I was wondering what you're supposed to do after that point.

Another question, what defines a trance? Is it just a deep state of relaxation, or is it when physical sensation is turned completely off, or both?
