That's a very good question.
I'm quessing but I think my astral body has various forms.It may be invisible (I perceive it without vision), it may be an orb, and it may be in various human shapes or forms as seen in typical dreams.
And I'm wondering too if it can't be in more than one place at a time.
Its all about perception. Nothing in the astral world looks the same for two people.

As a little kid I noticed my astral body took on the same form as my physical with the exception of being very radiant. This continued up until around seven years ago when I began to choose what form I took. Since then I have been an Eagle (my favourite), a Dragon and Bright orbs of white or gold light. I have met friends in the astral and one appeared as a tall warrior woman, which really suited the persons nature, as an aside, she was not aware of how she looked at that time. That's interesting hay?
I suppose what I am saying is that it might not matter what form you take naturally, or it may indicate something else about you by the choices that you make. Only you could answer that for yourself.

my BIG OBE: i normally expand to a larger form of my human body to begin with. it is not visible, even to myself, but i can "see" my hands and legs etc. It is more of an awareness of them that a physical sight. then, when i choose to become something, take another form, etc. i shift to what ever i chose and appear to be real and phisical in that form. but, the actual astral body in it's original form, just out of body, for me, is a clear, larger virsion of a human shape...or perhaps, that is the "form" it just was, so i see myself as that before i change...
another interesting experience, in a hotel room in vegas, 24 hours after the second sacred ceremony, (not sure if that had anything to do with it) but i was sitting on the bed, reading...had a thought about astral projection and in the same instant, i was engulfed in clouds and swirls of colors, lights, music...it was all very beautiful, was that my real astral body? I could still see the room through the lights and colors,it lasted about 3 minutes. then, it all stopped as it had started, it seamed to generate from and return within me. A.
I woke up one morning and saw my astral body laying next to me as clear as day. 'It' had every feature I had even down to my clothes from what I could see from the view I had. It was laying down in the same postion as I was and slowy dissipated.
I've only really looked at my body once, haven't been out many times so that is probably a good reason why... ;) But when I did look at myself I was more or less a skeleton... (i.e. bones without meat on).
Not sure why, but one guess is that when it happened I conciously decided to push out. This I thought was a very unique feeling, and actually felt like pushing out of the physical body. So a guess is that the subconcious couldn't grasp that I was a "spirit", but still felt I was out of body... So perhaps it thought I was the skeleton ;)
would it be possible to determine what form your astral body would take depending on your personality? and if so, what would i have to do? in the few dreams i remember semi-conciously dreaming, i have been either myself or a red dragon.
I had several shapes... Sometimes, none (just a point of consciousness); sometimes very close to my physical shape; sometimes "translucent spaghetti" like appearance; once some kind of dolphin, then some kind of reptile/crocodile...
things are normal for me i think... sometimes i can see difrent things, maybe i only see or maybe i can realy transform into something else.
ok some one here said he could be and orb i always thought orbs were just kinda like specks of stuff coming off angles any got any idea?
orbs are lots of energy together... like a ball of energy.
I had a VERY interesting OBE this morning. I was having trouble sleeping so I took 2 mg sublingual melatonin. Within about a half hour my body was asleep but my mind was still awake. I felt the vibrations come on and I intensified them using my own technique. I separated, floated around the room, and re-entered my body. I then separated again, sinking out from under my body and into my waterbed, I could "feel" the water![:O]
I then floated around the room but I couldn't see anything. Blackness. I then said out loud "clarity now" which is a technique I heard somewhere for gaining better astral sight. I could then kind of make out my astral body. It was translucent, like a ghost, no bright trippy colors, no aura or glowing blue outline.[V] I still could barely make out anything, there was so much blackness. This was the first time I've seen my astral body.
