Spinning

I know that this topic comes up fairly regularly.  It's when you have just separated and you find yourself automatically spinning.  And then normally (from what I've read), you spin even more until you feel sick and then that's the end of the experience.

Well, it happened to me for the first time last night.  During the night I had an OBE where I started to spin slowly just upon exiting.  I remembered all the posts and thought I'd see what, if anything, could be done to stop the spinning.

At first, as I began spinning, I thought to myself, "oooh, I'm spinning".  This made the spinning go faster.  Thought = reality.

Then as I spun faster, rather than get fearful of the spinning and panicking, I thought I'd like to slow it down.  It did.  Then I thought it slower and slower until it stopped.  I then managed to upright myself and went about having a "normal" OBE.

The key to stopping the spinning is not to think "I'm spinning, I'm spinning!" but to remain calm and mentally slow the spinning down.  It works.  Well, it did for me.

Iv never read about this spinning but thanks to you when i finally manage to astral project and find my self spinning i will know not to panic but just to relax and tell it to stop.
Btw what reason do you think that this happens during an astral projection in the first place.

Hi Dude

I have no idea whatsoever.  If the spinning only happened during the first few projections, then I might guess that it was because of some disorientation and unfamiliarity with the state of projecting.  However, I have been projecting for years and have had hundreds of OBEs.  My first "spinning projection" happened last night, therefore I can't say for sure.

I enjoyed the spinning, but that's probably because I'm so familiar with OBEs, it didn't worry me in the slightest - I simply noticed the sensation and took it all in my stride.  I know if it had happened during my first ever OBE, I might not have been so cool-headed.

Hi Sunn

I've never had it while meditating.  Please describe.

With the OBEs, it's the whole second body that spins, and because your conscious is in the second body, it's as if you are in a spin dryer!  It's not like you are feeling dizzy - this is much more literal than that.  Your whole body is spinning around, just like those astronauts who are practicing for being in space!

I've had that happen a couple of times and I find it to be one of the most annoying things EVER!!!!     I have an inner ear inbalance so any time I spin IRL I get super duper evilly puky!  SO when I spin OBE my mind basically travels uncontrollably to my memories of spinning IRL and makes me feel like I am dying and going to vomit everywhere.

To pseudo-hijack this thread, I just found a journal entry from nearly 9 years ago describing just this  :

Quote
I'm over in SC's back garden. My eyes are funny and I can't see properly - vision slightly distorted/not normal.
I am now in street near lamppost with SC, I realise I am dreaming and can feel my body in bed (I'm becoming more
awake). I tell SC this. My body feels like it is spinning over and over. It feels like I'm rolling over, I feel I'm near to the edge of my bed - I think I will fall off the bed but I tip myself over anyway. I feel like I'm floating (I wander if I'm having an obe). I try to open my eyes and I awaken lying on my back in bed.

I was looking through some very old webspace I own and haven't touched for 5-6 years and came across it .

Thanks for the "heads-up" Selski!

I've felt the bed spinning on occasion but that's an entirely different story!

I think it is related. It means your mind is separating from your physical sense of balance. You become disoriented. If you're doing an OBE exit at the time, I could see this turning into actual out-of-body spinning.

That's really cool you managed to stop spinning, Selski, with using your thoughts. I really need to do this instead of struggling to move - stop and use my mind.

This keeps happening to me when meditating, and indeed I think it has to do with balance... I get a lot of nauseating pseudo-movement impressions when I try for a wake induced OBE... The main reason seems to be that I'm laying on my back when I do it...

I'm not really used to sleeping on my back, so it's a rather unnatural posture for me, but sitting with my eyes closed and losing sensation of my neck gives me this deep feeling of disorientation... Sometimes I'll start spinning, or I'll have the feeling that I'm floating up or down, as other people often report...

But the thing is those sensations are nowhere near separation sensations, the way I would describe it is that the part of the brain that's in charge of keeping your balance just goes haywire... It starts rotating or moving around because it can't seem to find where it is... And so instead of being a good thing, it ends up making me sick for the next 20 minutes... I thought it'd wear off eventually, but I guess I fall into the "weak of heart" category :p

I don't know why the natural response to this is nausea... I mean, evolutionarily speaking, why would vomiting help if you're spinning out of control? Maybe the body assumes you're being attacked by some kind of wrestling monkey, and vomiting in its eyes is the only way to save yourself? :-D

I can relate to what knightlight said, I too had problems with my inner ear... I was going through a phase where I was pretty depressed, and it affected me so deeply I was unable to keep my balance... I tried to get dressed and I would just find myself on the floor before I could understand what was happening... The feeling is very similar to what I had when I closed my eyes, I had to keep my eyes half open when I wanted to sleep, otherwise I would lose my balance and get nauseous, start twitching, etc...

And I'm not done talking yet! Let's make this a novel :-D

The spinning, as silly as it sounds, was probably a trial for you, Selski, in the sense that we often get these kinds of trials in dreams and OBEs -- something out there is testing our willpower. It is putting us in a situation where we seem to be losing control when in fact we have full control over the situation. The more you run into such trials, the better you'll be at controlling your astral adventures, but it is not limited only to the astral.

You will find that it will have an impact on your everyday life too. By learning willpower, we learn to will things, we learn to see the unseen ; it is a very important part of learning extra-sensory perception, telepathy, telekinesis, etc...

Interesting.  When OOB, I only experience spinning when I ask for healing or heightened abilities of some sort.  For example, today, among other things, I asked for heightened psychic abilities and started spinning head over heels.  That was a new one.     Usually, I end up spinning to the left or right, so to speak.  Now a few times, I asked for my third eye to be opened a bit more and immediately felt like my third eye was being drilled.  My astral teeth were chattering from the vibration. Yikes!  Told whomever (myself, I guess) that I'd had enough and it stopped.  Anyone else?

Well I never knew spinning might happen but this is what I think about it.

I heard that when you have an OBE you do not have a "central vision" anymore, but you can actually look in all directions at the same time (or something like that). Since the concious mind cannot understand or do this a central vision will be created by the subconscious or so.
When you start spinning it might be because your coming closer to seeing all around you at the same time, and so your "central vision" starts spinning because your conscious mind cannot do it properly.
Does anyone understand what I mean with that?
