Title: When all reality checks fail
Post by: Simo on May 02, 2013, 15:58:08
So I had to wake up at 4 am to go with my family to the cemetery (Special day called Great Thursday by us non catholic christians)And we got back short after landing in our beds.I  found myself out of body and out of  the house.I wanted to visit a friend in usa and I started to fly fast and suddenly all got foggy and I was on our table eating with my brother.I was what???I looked at my hands,I looked at my plate I tasted my food I pitched my arm and I felt pain, the food tasted great, all mater felt ordinary!and I drifted off...Not a single reality check worked!

I noticed that after a while (though keep in mind this is a tad different from what you describe) of doing reality checks to become lucid in my dreams, they would stop working. The main one I used was attempting to push my index finger through the palm of the opposite hand and after some time of having much success with this method it altogether did not work - my finger would stop at the palm much like it would in Waking Physical Reality. Now at first, I was somewhat dismayed by this occurrence but after a while I realized that perhaps it was for the better as I would suddenly become lucid in dreams without any prior thought...it just sort of happened. This detracts a lot of the initial excitement felt with the achievement of lucidity, which in turn negated the undesirable effects of feeling the surge of emotion (rush in excitement leading to premature awakening from the dream)

So basically what I initially perceived to be a negative happening was actually something quite positive that has aided my non-physical development. A blessing in disguise, if you will. Never before had I really experienced the meaning behind that phrase in such a way that it directly affected me and I have noticed that while many aphorisms and famous quotes do have a semblance of truth to them, it is not until you experience an example of it from your own perspective that the saying truly bears weight. For this, I am grateful.

I did something similar just last night. I usually check time as a reality check. I always have very clear vision, and strong sensations of touch in my dreams, so pinching was never an option.
Just last night I was thrown on to a stage, with the expectations of me knowing the lines. I subconsciously turned back time, turned around, and grabbed a playwrite from the far wall, skimmed it really quick and walked through the curtains.
As I passed through I was above the stage near the lighting, my reading of the lines reverberated through the entire auditorium even though I had no microphone or anything on.

The problem with these subtle things, is it's hard to surpass the semi-lucid state. My brain has grown more and more tied to the 'plot' or my dreams, however I am subconsciously aware of the fact that I am dreaming and I change the state to better the course of the dream. I am now practicing getting in more and more touch with my subconscious through meditation and awareness.

There is always something different, the feelings and sensual information is 'different' however I have no memory of normal waking life so it's hard to categorize it as abnormal or dreaming. It's almost as if my abilities have taken a Parabolic curve back to when I was just learning to refine my natural Lucid Dreaming ability. You may have the similar problems, or a better idea as to solving this.

I have found that when a reality check, or in this case a series of reality checks fail... it's because of one reason: There wasn't enough focus put into the check.

This is why when we practice reality checks while awake, it's VERY IMPORTANT to stop everything you're doing and give the check your 100% undivided attention, so that this action carries over into your sleep time and you'll also give it your 100% undivided attention.  As long as you're doing that, it can't fail.

I have NEVER had a reality check fail when I do this correctly.

Hi Mikey.
Welcome to the Pulse.

Are you saying that you have no identity during the dream? In other words, you don't identify with being you?

Or you just don't know how you got there?

I don't have any idea about this. But I guess Xanth is right. There is a point is Xanth's reply.
