The LBRP is used to banish unwanted forces as well as balance the elements inside one's self.  The earth banishing pentagram is often used for all the elements, but there are also versions and practicioners that use the appropriate elemental pentagram for each corresponding direction.  The only difference in the pentagrams is the way they're drawn - i.e. which point you start at.

You're not really banishing earth, per se, but you're banishing unbalances in yourself and around you.  I don't practice ceremonial magick, so I may be mistaken, but I believe the earth pentagram is commonly used for all the elements because it's the most "dense" and so would cleanse the area of all "lighter" elements as well as earth.

The following is a link to a site that lays the ritual out for you, and it shows you the difference between the elemental pentagrams, as well as the difference between the invoking and banishing ones.  Hope it helps, and just remember that the LBRP, when practiced daily, does far more than banish elements.

While as I said, I don't currently practice ceremonial or ritual magick, rituals are far from useless when performed with the proper state of mind.  Oftentimes they're "tricks" to get the subconscious to put energy where it needs to be, but certain rituals provide a gateway to what's called a "current" or type of egregore.

The LBRP, for instance, has been used for a very long time, by a very large number of people.  It's developed its own "system" of astral commands and power, and can be used as a gateway to access an egregore that's used by magicians all over the world.  In addition, the proper vibration of godnames generates a specific current of energy, in order to charge visualizations with real power.

While ritual isn't for everyone, it can be a very powerful form of magick.  For anyone who wants to undertake it, though, I recommend a solid base in direct energy manipulation.  While it's not absolutely necessary (rituals like the LBRP and Middle Pillar, for instance, open the chakras over time) it's highly beneficial to speeding one's progress.

Can someone explain the rituals for me.
Lesser panishment of the pentacle is used to banish the earth, but if you need to ground why would you banish the earth. Just when is it used?
