sage and cleansing

Many native use sage to cleanse the area before
starting the real thing. Cedar is also used.

I suppose one of the reason is to use a smell that gives a
positive atmosphere as it repels negs.

Yes, a sage smudging stick is one of the most effective ways of clearing negative energies from a room. It calls upon the elements of both fire and air to do so, and is a method that has been used by Native Americans for a very very long time.

Hi,
Up until a few years ago I had judged sage smudging as a useless ritual that had no place in the world we are going into.

Then I went to a sweatlodge run by Grandfather Grey Wolf when he came to Australia.  The Firekeeper smudged us as we entered the site.  And I was still thinking it was a crap ritual when my turn came to be smudged.

He said to me, "Inhale the smoke as I work".  I did.  The first sniff blew me away !  It seriously blew me apart... I felt the power rushing...saw the purest of light around and through me... then found I was speaking from the depth of my being to the Firekeeper about our past-life connections...which then blew him away.

Do I still think of it as a crap ritual ?  No.  I experienced the power and cannot doubt it again.

Wiccans use sage for barriers (along with other herbs, different herbs are barriers to differnt things/energies).  Fresh is best, charged is better, fresh and charged can be quite effacious.

So if Witches and Shamans can use it, why not metaphysicists?

  Sage smudging can be used by everyone. The power to sage is to pray over it to connect it to the energies that cleanse evil. It is why there was a difference at the sweat lodge. Most people never add in the prayer which is what makes any herb, incense or method work.

I heard that sage has power to cleanse neg. energy. Is this true? and if it is, is there a certain kind i should get?
