Title: Bose-Einstein Condensate
Post by: dotster on July 20, 2011, 15:36:11
Interesting quick video on the state of matter known as bose-einstein condensate.

I think I have seen a recent experiment trying to produce this weird state of matter.  I will definitely find it for you.  If successful...OMG!  OMG indeed!  The quantum business gets weirder and weirder!  8-)

It has already been produced using lasers and evaporative cooling. The first time was in 1995. Strange world eh? :-)

Wasn't it with a metal strip the first time?  Now I think there is one that is going to place a glass sphere in two very distinct places at the same time.  It's like the light, which is quantum in nature, will force it into a superposition state.  The sphere will be in two cavities at once and more impressive than the earliest experiments.  It is something along those lines.  I need to find the paper where the idea was expressed.  I think it is more about trying to see if Schrodinger's cat experiment is true (seeing if macro objects can behave according to quantum laws) and an attempt to break down quantum theory all together.  Damn it, where did I see it?  It was somewhat relevant to this.  LOL   :-D

The first time it was achieved was using a gas of rubidium atoms cooled to 170 nanokelvin. BEC state of matter is reached by using temperatures approaching the range of absolute zero to cool atoms so that they vibrate in unison. They just last year observed the first photon BEC, so perhaps this experiment is based off of light particles in BEC state which would really be fascinating so if you find the link to that paper please post it, I would love to check it out.

Will do.  I'm pulling my hair out at the moment because I haven't been able to find it.  But it is defo recent... :-(
