Title: A good Shadow book
Post by: Nick on June 05, 2003, 13:06:30
timeless,

I ordered this book the other day from Amazon. It looks like it will be a fascinating read. However, I have to confess I have no idea what Shadow work is. Maybe it was mentioned at the book site and I overlooked it, not sure. Can you give a nutshell version of what Shadow work means? Thanks in advance.

Very best,

Dear Nick,

Shadow is in reference to Carl Jung's definition of the aspect of ourselves (part of us) where we suppress emotion, store memories, events, emotions, thoughts that we do not wish to deal with...behaviour we do not wish to own and wish to deny.  The Shadow is the Guardian of the Threshold.  I will have to explain more later.  Usually Shadow is what you face first as you open yourself up.

Best Regards,

Dear Noxerus,

Yes, you definitely have the right idea.  Sorry I was in a rush before. Here is a really good website so you can quickly brush up on Carl Jung's Shadow concept if you are interested.  It has a very good layout.

Dear Goingslow,

Nope!  I am planning to hopefully when I am in the city next.  Just basing it on the Art Bell interview I heard.  Sorry I could not verify yet.

Hi goingslow,

I ordered the book from Amazon a week ago. They still haven't shipped it. I checked the website which says that they expect to ship today or tommorow. So, hopefully I'll receive it by next week. I'm looking forward to reading it. I'll be glad to tell you what my impression is once I get a chance to read it. Take care.

Hi goingslow,

I just started the book the other day so I'll reserve any comments other than it is not quite what I expected. Lately, I've been reading three or four books at once, just picking up the one that I happen to be in the mood for at that moment. So at some point, I'll finish this one and write a post.

Hope it turns out to be a good read. [:)]

Thanks for replying nick,

I expected more of an informative book and not so much an autobiography myself.  Im about 1/3 done and im also reading a few at a time.  Trying to read Far Journeys and Carlos Casteneda's first book and alternating between them.

Ill definitely look for your review on the book though since Im curious what others might think of the guy.

Dear Goingslow,

Rating three out of 5 stars.  It was okay.  Usually an interview is a good indicator but in this case it was not.  Sorry about that.

Its strength was in showing how shadow affects many aspects of our lives, the importance of self reflection, and the like.  Its weakness was it did not trace the cure well.  He did not dig into how ego begats shadow.  I will not be reading anymore books on spirituality or psychology for a while since I am eating up writing books. Books on how ego generates shadow might be what you are looking for.

Since he chose narrative form perhaps he approached the book with this saying in mind, "If you truly know yourself, you know all others."  Problem is few ever go this deep inside -- Carl Jung being an exception.  I cannot criticize him however since I suffer from the same problem -- thinking I really know myself -- likely not.  It takes a theif to catch a theif.  So the book was an eye opener in that respect.

Best Regards,

hi goingslow,

Using the same rating system as timeless, I also came up with three stars. As timeless is the writer among us, her words put it best. The only thing I would add is that as a reader, I felt the writer could have used his writing skills to lay more of a foundation in the beginning regarding the background of the characters. I wanted more of a sense of history about them.

Still, since I love books so much, I'm glad I had the opportunity to read another!  [:)]

For those who are interested in Shadow work this looks quite good. I listened to this guy on Art Bell and am planning to buy the book.

The book review is below.  It also deals with lucid dreaming, remote viewing, OBE.
