Meditation brings about Awareness...although it's not the only practice or technique to do this, it is one of the most practical and popular.

Awareness in and of itself is transformative...

Why?

Because, as you become more aware you automatically drop what doesn't serve you. The miraculous thing about awareness is that whatever you consciously become aware of you drop since you can not do anything that doesn't serve you and do it

consciously. However, you can do things that do not serve you unconsciously; and do them for a very long time; this is the basis of all addiction and self sabotaging behavior.

Becoming aware of what you're doing and knowing what you are doing are two totally different things. You can know that you're doing something and still do it for years or forever, because the brain feeds off of habit and becomes comfortable in its ways. Thus, any force to change the subconscious will be always met with resistance as the subconscious's main function is to keep your way of seeing the world and yourself in relation to it the same. This is because while you were growing up you associated this way; or map of reality, with safety. The resistance is indicative of your subconscious mind not wanting to give up this safety and leap into a world of "danger" or the unknown.

In order to get past the subconscious mind and attain new information for advancement in life, becoming aware of what is already in the mind is prerequisite to deep and lasting change.

Ways in which you can come to terms with what is floating around in your mind is taking some time to do an internal reflection and "listening" to your mind. Unfortunately, in today's modern world the idea is to always be on the move so internal reflection is hit with internal resistance, due to the fact that our collective belief as a western culture is to relate sitting still with laziness and lack of productivity. But, taking time to do an internal reflection is crucial because it serves to cleanse and bring to surface many issues and ultimately will make a big difference.

Taking time everyday; about one minute every hour, to reflect is vital, and by writing down the thoughts that come to the surface you will be become more aware of how your map of reality is processing information and what its made up of. Set up an alarm so after this minute is over you can jot down any thoughts without judgment into a notebook. Do this for 2-3 weeks in the same notebook so you have a long list of thoughts that exist and reoccur in your mind.

Now that you have an idea of the thoughts you have in your mind, you can see which ones serve you and which do not. Focus on the thoughts that serve you and find a way to rewrite the thoughts that do not serve you. In other words literally rewrite the thought sentences from being negative and detrimental to positive and supportive of your goals and new outlook of life.

Soon the gap in your mind where the negative thoughts used to reside in will be an empty slot for new information, and this new information can be the foundation for building a new life.
