I'll be honest... yes, I totally agree with you, you *CAN* learn it on your own and completely free.

However, and this is something I've found from personal experience... sometimes there are just things which I needed to be told before I was able to "allow" myself to do them.  It's almost like I've never thought that way before and just realizing that someone else is telling me something which I feel in my heart resonates with me... is enough to get me to search for that something within myself.

This is what I've learned from listening to spiritual teachers lately.  It's a sense of "Oh really?  I didn't think I was allowed to think like that!!".  :)

I agree with xanth..

And just because you need to pay doesn't mean its already a scam.. I took pranic healing and I paid 300 dollar and its worth it. I could heal myself and my family. I even heal a friend who has a kidney failure and he saves thousands from operation and getting dialysis. Every organization or group or whatever needs money for maintenance..

But of course there are some that are scam and just after your pocket..

I have been on many amazing and life changing courses, but it depends what you want out of it. I have also obviously learned a great deal on my own.

I have also importantly made a great and supportive network of like minded friends.  :-)

I also agree with Xanth. If something is paid that doesn't means its scam.

We've all gotten to where we're at because of outside influences, though I'm one who believes all the information anyone needs is already freely available - you just have to take the initiative to find it. If your really into what you're doing, you'll find what you need no matter what. The more information you have in your arsenal, including things counter to what you believe, the better.

I get a lot of satisfaction by doing things on my own. I've also become pretty jaded towards anything with a "new-age" feel to it, which is most of what's being sold. I'm not saying it's all bad, just that it's not for me. I rarely relate to it.

I raise my hand, I have attended a retreat held by the staff at Glorian: www.gnosticteachings.org the retreat was great, schedule included meditation and pranayama sessions, mantras/vocalizations and detailed lectures about the spiritual path, consciousness, religion, enlightenment, occultism, esotericism etc etc. I found this group to be safe and a take it or leave it (its up to you) attitude, they give you the practices and information, then it is up to you whether you decide to take it any further after the retreat is over. In my opinion, what they teach is a robust and complete system of spiritual development.

If you are interested to know more about what this group teaches, I highly recommend you visit their sister site which is www.gnosticradio.org where you can download lectures about various subjects, each week they do a live lecture where you can join in an online chat to ask questions at the end, I believe the lectures can be heard live or streaming through iTunes as well, otherwise the site above contains a lot of those audio lectures transcribed into written format for easy reading, complete with diagrams and a forum, etc.

Hi,
Putting things into perspective, some are scams. Its all colourful sales with no info on their product.
Others are real, they do offer a service that can help those who want to learn about whats on their site. Lots of details, names and photos are always present with what you can expect. Also a communication page is there viamany means to help the individual if their courses are whats needed.
Look at the names and search the net. You'll get lots of details on the genuine ones. Any scammers will be there too.

Also if you take on online course make sure it has refund time period. I tried one and was not pleased w/ material, perhaps a scam, just gave me a bad vibe like it was phony. I did get a refund. I agree w/ others that there is plenty of free guidance that is helpful.

Also I found that some of the moderators on this forum have great website's that were helpful and and have found good links on the sites for even more helpful guidance. Thanks moderators. hope that helps

I think having like-minded people around and getting together in person to practice or just talk or whatever can be great (and those people can be hard to find, but precious if you do), but I would really advise against joining a 'spiritual' group of any kind, no matter how benign it looks. That's all I can really recommend right now... The community aspect can be beneficial but as soon as spirituality starts to take on religious traits, which it often does when there's organized teaching going on, things can tend to go wrong. That said, I'm going to be taking a Qi Gong course soon and have no problem with that sort of thing, because I'm not joining anything. Courses =/= organisations. Just be careful.

Years ago I joined a Grove in Minneapolis, Mn. It was short lived because not everyone in the group had the some positive intents. I always felt when we got together that there was a "chink" in our armor. It just didn't feel like our energies were "jelling".

I had the same thing when participating in a group meditation. Even though there was a single thing everyone should be doing, it became obvious that a good number of people just did whatever they felt like doing. The discussion afterwords made me realize I do fine on my own.

Not that I wouldn't want to be part of a group... it just seems impossible to find that group.

Hi,
Related experience.
A while ago I ventured into a spiritualist church to see what its all about. Seemed mostly as expected apart from a couple of attendees. One was at the front the other stayed with the congregation.
Brief splash of who's who and the front guy started reading people. It seemed in order but one of the old girls had two weeks to live. I knew this just being in the room and he never picked this emotion. Strange I thought. I closed off and he couldn't get an iota from me. He kept coming back, several times too. He knew its was something I was doing and after asked why politely. I filled in the blanks.
My first impression or expectation was its a rouse for donations. Wrong, this guy was good, it shows that expectation causes a tar and feathered attitude.
The other guy came to individuals after telling them their illnesses and offered help.
Overall quite impressive.
I've been back on one occasion a few weeks later and he said at the door she's gone. I knew what he was saying. He must have sneeked a look when I was occupied looking for the old girl.
That was very unnerving, not been since.
