When you put it that way the first thing to come to mind is staring at a candle. I have tried it but never really gotten the point. What I always find myself coming back to is watching the sensations of the breathing. The stomach moves up and down. The air goes through the nose and over the upper lip. You can follow the breath up and down or you can stay with it at a specific point. The whole body eventually moves with the breath when you are fully relaxed, even in the full lotus posture. Counting each breath before, after, or even both can help to stabilize the mind on the breath. When it has been done, you can drop the counting. One through ten and back again from one through ten is better than continuing to count several hundreds because at some point it is the numbers which matter instead of the breathing. Also, when you are using other objects for meditation and find your thoughts out of control you can briefly switch over to counting your breathing to help control the excess thinking.

Hi everyone!!!!  I'm still having ttrouble meditating. What's supposed to happen? If someone wouldn't mind sharing their technique and what happens during a meditation session, I'd be really greatful!!!

The way to evaluate how your meditation practice is going is to look at how it is affecting your daily life. Fifteen minutes daily meditation for a period of three months has been shown to decrease response to stress hormones. It also becomes easier to recognize patterns in daily life where you find yourself getting stuck. It gives you the detachment to choose if you want to continue as usual or choose another approach.

What techniques have you been using? Why don't you think it is working?

Hi Michael,
I begin my sessions with an "intent" to meditate.I unplug my phone and make sure no one is expected at the door, and the house is quiet and empty except for myself and my pets.  I then seat myself fomfortably in an arm chair. Placing both feet, usualy bare, flat on the floor, and having my hands palms down on my lap. I let the arms of the chair support my elbows. I do not have a head rest on my chair. I sit up very straight, and close my eyes.
I breath in a relaxed mannor, drawing energy up through the bottom of my feet to the top of my head with the first three or four breaths. Then I simply relax and look at the darkness behind my closed eyelids. I stay in this state for a while, waiting patiently, and expectently for my body to go to sleep. If I have thoughts I simply "watch" them go by, but not getting caught up in them.
Once your body has "gone to sleep" your conciousness will be yours to direct. I have seem and learned much at this stage in meditation, and if a guide arrives I find an adventure in creative learning ahead. You will not know til you get there....

Hi Everyone!!! I know I've already posted a question on meditaion, but it was a long time ago, and I need to clear things up a little. I don't know how to meditate. I'm blind, so staring at a candle flame or something like that won't work. Is there anything I can do?
