Seeing lightning during a storm

the eyes are highly photosensitive, and i can't yet explain it but there's something that changes in the mind when the eyes are closed as opposed to when they are open, regardless of the presence of light, which seems to allow me (while eyes are closed) to percieve even minute changes in the ambient light in my surrounding environment.

for instance, just last night as i was heading to bed after turning off my computer (and it's normally pitch black as i sleep in the basement), i closed my eyes and tried to see my way to my room without using my physical sight (which would have been useless anyways as it was "pitchblack" ^_^). interestingly enough, when i came upon the short "hallway" that occurs just before my bedroom, my vision seemed to get darker... which was strange to say the least since even with my eyes open i could percieve no difference between that area and the rest of the basement. i turned my head a few times with eyes closed to check it out some more, and even moved over to about where there is another doorway and once again i could percieve a change while my eyes were closed but not while they were open.

something in my mind told me that it was a physical effect and not a metaphysical thing, so i opened my eyes and looked around the basement again, and sure enough my brother's monitor was turned on: though he normally turns it off, as do i with mine, which is why i at first took for granted that there was "no" light down there when i had looked around the first time. i guess my eyes just needed time to adjust to the darkness before i could see the faint light the monitor was giving off. and yet, even before my eyes adjusted while open, i could distinguish the patches of darker darkness while my eyes were closed.

truly a strange thing ^_^

This is very different than being able to sense darkness in a room when your eyes are closed, I am aware of how that can change. I wanted to know if the lightning effect had happened to anyone else when they were very far from a window, not if it get darker in a room even when their eyes were closed.

truly a strange thing ^_^

Like I said before, this never happened to me before I started meditation, and hasn't happened to anyone I know. I was no where near a window, my wooden blinds were tightly shut, and the only other person I know it has happened to has also been doing the same meditation. You did not

vitality84

I am new to this and didn't mean to reply with the quote. I was trying to say that I too can sense when something is metaphysical and when something is not metaphysical, just this time I felt so comfortable with it that it didn't make me feel crazy afterwards.
I know that darkness in a room can change even when your eyes are closed. However, my question was whether or not you or anyone else had ever seen flashes of light when there was a lightning storm, while you were far away from the window, not if you can tell a room is darker when your eyes are closed. This is a given since when you flash a bright light on your eyes you can see red because light can travel through your eyelids. However, being so far away from the lightning and having wooden blinds and being in bed with my eyes closed I did not have a light flash on top of my lids to signify lightning. I didn't ask whether or not a room could get darker when your eyes are closed, I wanted to know if this has happened to anyone else. And, since your argument is that it was not something metaphysical, then why didn't you tell me that it has happened to you and many other normal people you know during lightning storms?

vitality84

I should have gone more to the point. Your answer is that you can tell whether or not a room is darker 'better' with your eyes closed than with your eyes open. Meaning, I cannot see a flash of lightning go through wooden blinds and bounce off 3 walls to hit me on the bed with my eyes open, I must have my eyes closed to 'really' perceive lightning better. It's of no consequence that it was a much different light than lightning was, and that this never happened to me before I started chakra meditation, even when I was in mexico when there were lightning storms right near me every night, and all throughout my childhood.
If you can see better in dark areas with your eyes closed, then people shouldn't open their eyes to watch a lightning storm, people shouldn't open their eyes to try to see in a dark room, they shouldn't open their eyes during a meteor shower, they shouldn't open their eyes in the dark while driving a car, because they can see light and sense their surroundings better in the dark..
That really doesn't make any sense.

vitality84

And I don't mean to keep replying to this but I wanted to explain to you something I don't think you're aware of. When you wear sunglasses into a dark room, the room is darker than if you hadn't of worn them at all. The same could be applied to having your eyes closed, because the lids act as a sort of 'sunglasses' to your eyes.
Now, your argument is that you can perceive the change of light in a room better with your eyes closed than open. However, I think your argument points out that you can tell whether a room is darker with your eyes closed than your eyes open. If you wanted to watch a meteor shower, you would not close your eyes to see one, would you? If the night was pitch black, if my room was very dark, and if lightning had actually passed through my wooden blinds and bounced off the walls, wouldn't I have seen it with my eyes open? I wouldn't be able to see a flash of light better in a dark room with my eyes closed, I would better sense a flash of 'darkness' in a dark room with my eyes closed, i.e. wearing sunglasses. Next time if you want to contrast and compare experiences to prove your point, pick an experience that has some relevance to mine.

This angered me because I felt your argument was entirely flawed, and I wanted to go to a place of understanding, not know it allism with incredibly flawed arguments. I know it wasn't something normal that happens to 'everyone' because why did it never happen to me before I started meditation? Over 18 years, does that make any sense? Why hasn't anyone else had a similar experience? Why not my mom whose room is literally 5 feet away and whose blinds don't even shut all the way? Our windows are on the same wall, no less than 10 feet away from each others. You, with your personal experience that is not related to mine, know the eyelids are highly 'photosensitive' and that's that. Well alright.

kakkarot

my point was that your eyes are very photosensitive but when they are closed they seem to be even more sensitive to ambient light differences eventhough it may not seem so.

you are correct: no i was not talking about lightningstorms at all, but the principle still applies is what i'm saying. however, if you think that your experience was metaphysical and that the principle does not apply, then just say so and disregard my post [:)].

as well, if you feel bad about replying three times, then just use the edit button

The same principle does not apply. Your theory is still that the eyes are more sensitive to light when the eyes are closed, so you should be able to see more light with your eyes closed than if they are open, correct? Turn off all of the lights in your room, and leave your monitor on. Look at the light with your eyes open, then with your eyes closed. Which light looks brighter?
Your theory does not make any sense, only when applied to darkness in a room--darkness is darker when you have shades on or when your eyes are closed. Why you couldn't see the light from a monitor that was on, while your eyes were open, tells me you really have bad eyesight, or no logical sense of what 'brighter' light means. When LIGHTNING COMES THROUGH A DARK ROOM YOU CAN SEE THE LIGHT BRIGHTER WITH YOUR EYES OPEN THAN WITH YOUR EYES CLOSED. THE DIFFERNCE you seem to NOTICE better with your eyes open is because YOUR EYELIDS are like SUN GLASSES and darkness will be more PRONOUNCED than with your eyes OPEN. Why didn't I see ANY LIGHT with my eyes open? Your theory does not apply to that, but you acted as if it did and that you were completely right no matter what. You alwayas think you're right even when you make no sense, and that is very sad.
Why don't you go argue 'you notice differences between light better with your eyes closed' to a scientist!! Maybe they will tell you you are a genius and that you deserve to be a rocket science with your intelligent brain. YOU SEE DARKS DARKER NOT LIGHTS BRIGHTER and you still do not UNDERSTAND the DIFFERENCE.
I have never been more frustrated with somebody's lack of intelligence than I have today. YOU NEVER answered my question about whether YOU HAVE SEEN LIGHTNING BETTER WITH YOUR EYES CLOSED OR YOUR EYES open or if you have ever seen lightning AT ALL with your eyes closed, in a dark room, 20 feet away from a window, in a completely different corner not facing the window, your window having wooden blinds. If it's so normal to happen, and if you notice 'ambient light better' with your eyes closed, then it should have happened to you by now, RIGHT?!
You just talk about how a room was DARKER when your eyes were closed than with your eyes open. WOW a REAL Sherlock Holmes there!!! The only real 'perception' you had of there being more of a difference with your eyes 'closed' was just because you lack INTELLIGENCE and don't even understand the actual mechanics of it to even put two and two together. I cannot BELIEVE you still think you are right. This is the problem with trying to ask meditative/psychic people about this kind of stuff on the internet. You get people like yourself who say, "and I could tell it was not a metaphysical experience," the fact that you EVEN COULD CONSIDER that a metaphysical experience tells me that you are one who probably just 'guesses' things and then when you're right you think oh I'm psychic, aren't I? The fact that you ignored all of the facts and all of the questions in my statement, and then tried to compare a completely different experience to it, acting as if it's the same, shows me how little intelligence you really have.
Noticing a room is 'darker' with your eyes closed than with your eyes open is nothing at all like seeing a flash of bright light during a lightning storm, 20 feet away from a window, in bed, with wooden blinds, in four separate incidents, never seeing them before meditation, is completely different! Get a brain, and then put your input. Stop trying to act so nice and smart, you are NOT.

I think your experiences was highly metaphysical if not downright mystic. But NEW can do such to you and while i dont know about Chacra meditation, it sounds like it is potent stuff also.

I never seen Lightning with my eyes closed. And neither has anyone i know off.I can only see magnetics after doing NEW(with my eyes closed ,off course) and the source must be very near. How long do you train each day? Can you see it in the basement also ?

Ohh and dont let kakarott bother you .I am sure he ment well but often hes posts is somewhat off. atleast they make funny reading.
Dont you think you came down a little hard on him ?After all there is no need for Flaming!

vitality84

Yes I did, looking back I feel bad. I didn't know something would make me so mad, before this sort of thing didn't make me upset, but it was really personal to me and I was finally looking for some people with similar experiences and understanding.. and then I just received that comment so I was just really mad. I am usually not that upset.
Thank you for being so understanding :)

I recently started the NEW system and chakra meditation, and I have improved my health a whole lot because of it. I have achieved a body asleep/mind awake state once, but in general I am pretty new to all of this and haven't accomplished a whole lot. However, after doing chakra meditation for a little while, a few months, there was a lightning storm, and while I was in bed, with the blinds closed, closing my eyes, I could see flashes of bright light every so often. When my eyes were open I wouldn't be able to see anything, being far away from a window with the blinds closed, but sure enough within a few seconds I would hear a loud roar of thunder. About a couple weeks ago there was another lightning storm and this time I wasn't trying to sleep during it. When I blinked I would see a flash of light, more of a white light this time than a yellow light.. It happened again while I was reading, when I blinked I saw another flash of white light..
Anyhow, this is the one thing that has happened to me lately that my mind hasn't hurt from, i.e. I didn't feel like I was going crazy, it just seemed natural, but my friend who has also had the same experience (psychic and does chakra meditation), said it could just be lightning going through the blinds and into the room.. but why would it only happen to me and not anyone else in my family I wondered, but I asked a bunch of 'normals' just to see if it happened to them.. They all said no or "I don't know," and didn't really believe me I think.. so I wanted to know if this happens to anyone else here.. Since I've been doing the meditation I've had lots of deja vus, and that's what makes my head hurt, but the flashes of light didn't bother me at all.
