Title: Tinnitus and Meditation
Post by: Smokeytehbear on November 20, 2009, 22:00:40
Hello all,

I've recently been experimenting with meditation and hemi-sync waves.  Now I've had tinnitus for probably 15 years, it's not bad, it's always there but it's only noticable to me when it's quiet or when I concentrate on it.  Ever since I have started using hemi-sync and binaural beats, the tinnitus has become significantly more noticeable.  Not louder, I just struggle with it a lot more in the sense that I'm much more aware of it and it's becoming a barrier to my meditation.

A part of me is also concerned that the binaural and hemisync are somehow making the condition worse and damaging my ears.  I'm having good results with this technology and I want to keep on my path, but anyone who has tinnitus knows how tormenting this condition can be and I don't wish to make things worse.  On the other hand I've heard of people actually using the 'sound' to further themselves into meditation and even help them project.  It may work but i'm actually scared to try it, when I focus on the sound it can become all I hear and I'm scared that will also worsen things and if I focus on it too long I won't be able to 'come out of it'.  I guess I'm just looking for anyones insight or experiances of people trying to meditate with tinnitus.

I have tinnitus and have had it pretty much as long as I can remember, though as I got older, it became more persistent and more noticeable. I also use binaural beat technology regularly and have for some years now.

I haven't noticed that the tinnitus gets worse after using binaural beats. I do notice that listening to anything too loudly with headphones will cause an increase in the ringing, so keeping it relatively low is a good idea (you don't need it loud to get the benefit). There's no reason to think that this technology would damage your ears any more than listening to music in earphones would.

As for tinnitus, itself, here are things that I've noticed definitely make mine worse: listening to stuff too loudly with earbuds or headphones, eating too much salty food (no, I don't know why), becoming dehydrated, taking ibuprofen (which I still do sometimes, anyway, I just know it's likely to make the tinnitus a bit worse for a while).

You may be noticing the tinnitus more because you're simply becoming more aware, in general. I know mine is more noticeable when I notice it (if that makes sense). :)

I can definitely attest to the fact that while meditating, all your senses go into hyper overdrive.  It's quite crazy.
The softest of sounds strangely become the most loud and startling sounds you've ever heard.  LoL

This is most likely exactly what's happening here.  Nothing more.  :)
Hemi-sync isn't anymore better or worse than any regular-day listening you do.
