Benefits of "opening" the third eye?

It's not some magical experience in the way you mean.  It's one aspect of a step on your path to enlightenment.

You seem to want to skip the basics and fundamentals and jump straight to a specific aspect, in the hope of what?  I don't mean you can't do it, you can, but I don't think the experience will be what you think it is.  I'm trying to figure what experience your after, then perhaps we can figure what path you need to trod to experience it.

In other words, your better off to not try opening just your 3rd eye.

Actually the third eye is not aka the pineal gland.  Scientists have yet to discover a definate purpose for the pineal gland, and mystics only presume it's use, it's not actually known.  It's not located where the third eye chakra is located.  Third eye located on the brow, pineal gland located at the base of the brain.  Some believe that it holds mystical powers or that it is the center for mystic experiences.  It's quite possible that this is true.  But it's different then the third eye chakra.  I've never actually opened the third eye chakra, so I don't know it's benefits.  Perhaps instead of why, you could ask why not.  Try opening the third eye chakra just to see what it does.  That alone should answer your question.  That brings up another question though.  Has anyone ever tried to stimulate the pineal gland as a chakra?  Maybe I'll create a post asking that.

The pineal gland produces DMT and 5-MeO-DMT all the time, and releases it in small ammounts during sleep, and completly during near / death situations. But it is a bad idea to start with opening it, doing so requires many things, more specifically that you are a psychologically balanced, and comfortable with things like this.

Some might say that healthy stimulation/activity in the pineal gland (i.e. electromagnetic energy) serves to "open" the third eye. I've no idea if this is actually true, however.

Addendum: It all goes along with the idea of possible neurological/physiological "causes" for altered/expanded states of awareness. In the same way that some scientists say they can trigger OBEs through electrical stimulation of certain parts of the brain (though they usually write such states off as hallucinations), perhaps the stimulation of the pineal produces DMT which triggers expanded consciousness states- which some call "opening the third eye".

Many say you shouldnt open your third eye or other chakras before you're "psychologically balanced" etc.

I disagree with both. Information is always good. Use chakras as soon as you can.

I still maintain it's a bad idea to work only on his 6th Chakra to the exclusion of other chakra's, energy work, and any background work to the comman experiences of Auric sight.

I agree you shouldnt do ONLY the 6th, but I dont think its necessary to do only the lower chakras first either.

First off Chakras are not simply opened or closed like "open" suggests. Chakras are more like muscles. They are about how well they are developed and they are always working. And like developing the muscles of your body you need balance. If you concentrate on only developing say your upper body then your lower muscles will remain weak. Not only will this look odd but your lower body will have difficulty supporting the greater mass of your upper body.

If you are asking what the third eye, 6th chakra, is associate with then it is intuition, insight, and what people dub psychic abilities (but what are psychic abilities other than developed insight and intuition?). Basicly the 6th chakra is about being aware.

Whoops! The third eye is connected to the pituitary gland, crown chakra is connected to pineal. I always mix those up. And it is prudent to develop all of your chakras in a well-paced, deliberate manner as noted by many others here.

What are the reasons for wanting to open your third eye?
I've heard your third eye contains dmt and 5-meo-dmt.
Those 2 are hallucinagenic drugs.. How can you make your "third eye" produce these drugs without almost dieing... lol
