Greetings!

When I was around eight years of age, my parents and brother who is three years younger than me moved to a large old house. We lived there for a few years and during that time my brother and I together and independently of each other kept seeing an old lady in the house, she always had the same fur coat on. Every time that we met her she appeared to be in a hurry, not only that she always looked angry. When we told our parents that we had seen her, we were told that we must have imagined it, but we knew better!

One night shortly after I went to bed, something caught my eye; illuminated from the light outside I could see a face looking around the room from the open door that was near my bed. That ugly face which was now staring at me, I will never forget – ever!
I felt a scream welling up in my throat but no sound would come because I had never seen anything so scary before.  I remember blinking my eyes hoping that when I opened them whatever or whoever it was would be gone. I couldn't shout for my mum because she was in a room further away than the thing that was looking at me, and if I shouted it was nearer to me than her, so I kept blinking my eyes then squinting to see if it was still there, I remember my heart was pounding so loudly, so I slowly turned around away from the open door hoping that it would go away. The next thing I felt pressure on my shoulder, it was as though I was being prodded, but I was far too scared to turn around!  – And then nothing till I awoke next morning. When mum came into the bedroom, she gave a shout because all the religious ornaments that had been on the mantelpiece were lying on the hearth broken.

Around this time both my brother and I both started sleepwalking. (In those days people didn't lock their outside doors) On one occasion I was caught dressed in my school uniform just as I was going out of the door to go to school during the night, on another my brother was found in the neighbourhood in his pyjamas. Once I went into the bathroom and it had completely changed in appearance, yet when I asked my mum to come and look it had all changed back.  I was always told the same thing; you are imagining things, or you have just had a bad dream.

After we left that house, we never saw the old lady again. Many years later, I found out that an old lady had once lived and died in that house. We never did find out who or what broke the ornaments. I stopped sleepwalking, but my brother still did this until his teens. My parents especially my dad was very religious, so that anything that couldn't be explained rationally was considered to be dreams or just an overactive imagination.

All good wishes,
Barbara
