This is a very good question.  I have also heard about emotional control being a necessity otherwise the OBE ends, but at the same time have read many experiences where people experience intense emotion such as love or fear and it has not ended the OBE.  Truthfully, I don't know.  I recommend asking this question to Robert Bruce himself at robertbruce@atraldynamics.com, and continue looking at this forum to see if anyone else with more experience than me can answer it.  Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

I have thought about this and I think I might have come up with the answer, maybe. It is not really the strong emotion that ends the experience, it is either one of two things. One you become scared or overwhelmed with any emotion and as a reaction you "feel" for your body for security. Being out of body at first can make you feel vulnerable. It does feel different not having a physical body at first. When one is overcome with emotion, you seek a feeling of security and out of habit "feel" for the solidity of your physical body. The other thing is that you become so overwhelmed by an emotion that you go into shock so to speak. Your mind sort of freezes up, you loose consciousness, ending the experience and you wake up back in your body.

This to me explains why not everyone goes immediately back to their bodies when emotions become strong. Some have more control over their emotions so they do not build as quickly to the point to of loosing consciousness. Some do not instinctly feel for their physical bodies, thus leaving them in the astral until either they get their emotions under control or they black out.
Alice had got so much into the way of expecting nothing but out-of-the-way things to happen, that it seemed quite dull and stupid for life to go on in the common way.

good post fallnangel!
I would add that not everybody knows that their fear can be soothed by the beings that are taking care of them, and thus might sink into it, solution is eather being back to the body, or gaining confidence, by finding the presence needed, I found the presence needed after long beggings (started to feel fear (of the dead) in the physical)... the path from darkness to light is not that even: it is needed in order to be helped, to empty yourself a lot, until there is room for soothing, these depth exist not only in the astral, but When I experienced it last night being out of body, it was much increased, and so more real... yet the mental shift is the same than in the physical.

Hi ASunnieSpirit,

There have been some discussions on the forum regarding this very issue. In some of the threads Frank has pointed out that in the astral "thought equals direct action". Therefore it is important to try and maintain a state of "mild curiosity" and a "neutral and passive awareness". Of course, all of this is easier said than done, as I have work to do in maintining the neutral detachment myself.

Recently, one of our members Parmenion, started a thread that covers this area. You may want to take a look. Here's the link:

Very best to you in your astral studies,

I think fallnangel is right !
There must be these two kinds of fears:
1st: you remain frozen and can`t think of anything
2nd: when all you think about is being fine and secure in your physical body

Maybe this could explain why some are pulled back in their bodies and some don`t :)

Just my opinion,

I usually find that an emotional reaction causes instantaneous consequences in the astral,or real-time body.the same can be said about an idea I suddenly get while travelling out of body.it's almost like before the emotion or idea even gets established,it causes somtheing to happen instantly!

Thank you all for your posts,
Ive been thinking it over and i wondered if it had something to do with our guides. Monroe mentions that every trip to the astral contains some kind of lesson, so perhaps our guides help us stay in the astral long enough until we can learn from whatever challenge we may encounter.
Just a thought...

Hello,
I've been a lurker since summer but finally decided to put up a post.

I'm confused about emotion in the astral. I have read that too much of any emotion can cause the OBE to end, and that even a small thought such as "I wonder If anything bad will happen" can cause you to be pulled right back into the physical even if you didn't want to.
But many people have experienced such extreme fear that they beg for help several times before finally getting out. How come this didn't trigger an automatic reflex to be kicked back into physical?
Is this reflex something that only happens to beginners?
