Seeing through my eyelids

Hey, I'm new here, but have been interested in OBE/Astral Projection for a few years now, drifting on and off practicing techniques etc. But I am determined not to give up this time. I have never projected, but felt as if I had come close many times.

Last night, while going through relaxation exercises and inducing a trance state, my mind became blank and it felt like I was floating around inside my physical body. After some time I began to see an image of a candle of some sort. But it wasn't dominating my vision. It was as if there was a hole in my eyelid for a few brief instances. Like something was piercing through it.

These visions ultimately distracted me enough to bring me out of the trance state and to drift off into sleep.

So, my question is: What exactly were these images/visions and the ever-present question...was I close to getting out?

sounds like your getting real close. Images gotten pre exit can lead in someway to a full exit. The images that lead to exits are always acting on their own(in my case), any kind of action on my own part as far as questioning what it is or manipulation of the image does nothing. The images often evolve into some kind of explosion which is when the full exit takes place and when it does the exit is also explosive as you may end up far above your location of projection.

I guess i would have to say dont let the image distract you, i know thats easier said than done, but approach your relationship with the images with a playful observant attitude, see what happens. A lot of this is trial and error, it seems.
If you will it it is no dream.

I would have to say that Michael_E has a good point that it is a good idea sometimes to be passive towards the imagery you receive prior to an exit.  Anything could pop into your head when your getting close.. the hard part is just to stay awake through it.  I had an experience one time when I saw a cave in the distance which looked like fog was overtaking it and the fog in front of the cave turned into a window with 4 tiny panes of class with a wooden border running crossways to separate the 4 panes (like a big PLUS sign if you konw what I mean) .. the plus sign started to grow these 2 little white balls which clashed together eventually... upon the clash of these 2 balls in my imagery , I felt and heard a powerful buzzing sound as if vibrations were starting to engulf my head and ears.. this sound led to an exit but only after I let those balls clash and be passive and observant to what I was viewing and even feeling.. I persisted and eventually the fog turned into my room which I would normally see if I had opened my eyes at the time.  This is just one example of how you can be passive and still end up "OUT". It just takes practice and believe me.. the wierd cave/window/balls imagery is not the strangest stuff I've seen before an exit but most of the imagery seems to develope something to make noise and the noise is the initiation of the vibrations soon to take place it seems..

Another example was 2 sticks I saw which had these orange things orbiting around the sticks some way and when they would orbit really fast it would make a whoom or whoosh sound that instantly let me know "Ohhh vibes are coming!" its just that distinct feeling I got from the imagery... that sound I just "knew" it was vibes coming and it sounded similar to the noise of the 2 balls crashing in that previous experience..  It just seems to me that sounds will start to come into the picture sometimes and those sounds help me to realize how deep I am into trance and mostly if I'm hallucinating sounds during imagery they sound as though they are taking place in the same room... kinda wierd too heh..

Good luck in your explorations/practices bud.  I wish I could say it gets easier over time.. but for me it hasnt.. its the opposite but most if it is because of changes in my life that (for the time) are pushing me more towards the physical aspects of what we call .... life...  Bleh...
Loving yourself first is the most important step you must take before you can truly love someone else.
