Stepping on very thing and extremely rusty ice but...

TAN = single (Essential Kanji 1st paper back, 8th printing  the glyph is 390)
TAO = way, path (Ibid. the glyph is 141)

In the case of TAN the translitteration of the reading presented in the source is same in both Jap and Chi.
For TAO the reading is DOh, TOh, michi for JAp and TAO for Chi.

So I'd bet the guy was Chinese and the greeting should read "One Way"

I now yield to someone who actually know either language in any detail.....

Hi Jouni,
Thank you for looking those words up for me,  that's great! http://www.astralpulse.com/forums/images/icon_Smile.gif" border=0>

Kakkarot: A bit hard that one, a single syllable can mean a lot of things especially in chinese as the pronounciation and tone changes meaning.
Are you sure it was JING and not CHING, HSIN, SHIN, CHIEN  or JIN for ex. Also any other syllable with JING? Situation?

I'll see what I can come up with if you can provide a bit more info like what I've listed above.

And do remember that I don't actually speak either language, much less write.

it is a word on auraseer's page of "ki techniques". it says that "jing" is more powerful than ki. but i have NEVER heard of the word jing before, so i was wondering if you could help me out. i have gone to a few japanese-english and chinese-english dictionaries, and they had some references to words that had jing as a part of the word, but nothing with jing on itself. so i am wondering if it is even a real word, or if someone made it up.

thanks.

I'll take a look and see what I can come up with. Jing doesnät really ring a bell at the moment. Maybe the word si an attempt at a phonetic spelling of some other word. Hmmmmm....

Right... Enough's enough :)

I'm taking a wild guess and proposing that the term JING in this case is the YIN side of the YIN/YANG duality with the YIN representing the dark/ destructive/evil/female.

Another could be JING as a different translitteration of CHING form Tao De CHING with the meaning scripture. But as the term is used side by side with KI and other energy related terminology this is unlikely.

So, JING=YIN with the meaning of the destructive manifestaiton of the universal energy.

And I'm waaayyyyy guessing really, sounds kinda workable .

I remember seeing some references to "jing" as one of the "three treasures" (along with chi/qi and shen).  Here are some websites I bookmarked back then & haven't looked at since:

http://www.dragondoor.com/golafson_qi.html

Hope that helps!

From one of the DragonDoor links ...

Jing is manifested force. When we deadlift, we are demonstrating our external Jing. External Jing is force that can be seen, internal Jing cannot be seen. An internal strike, where an adept places his palm on an enemy and causes damage and pain with little or no visible movement, is a primary goal of the martial side of internal Qigong.

thanks for the three links, Jacara, but i don't think i would trust any of them as all indications of their sites seem to be that they are north americans who are trying to capitalize on oriental concepts. although the first one is done by a man that has done plenty of research, i don't trust that people who are trying to sell things will always tell the truth in a way that is more truthful than manipulative.

but at least they have shown to me that auraseer didn't just make the word up and the first one has also given me a basic understanding of what jing is. thanks.

but i will check out their links to other, possibly more unbiased sites.

I can't attest to how well the websites describe anything.  In my web travels I happened to find a number of articles which all referred to those same terms in the same way, so I knew there really was such a concept and it's not something one person was making up.  I bookmarked those three sites because they seemed to be the most informative of the few that I looked up, but I'm sure there are better ones out there.
I don't usually trust information from websites that try to sell things either, I completely understand that.  But I was just looking for basic definitions, I wasn't about to trust my health to it or anything.

jacara: thank you.

i had thought that you only knew of just a few sites with those words. thank you for letting me know that many others use them as well.

after all, with more people doing something one way, it is more and more likely that that way is more and more correct, and therefore more trustworthy. (except for the sheep effect which comes into play sometimes).

Greetings!

I typically lurk here, but thought I'd post a couple of links for people that may be interested.  The first link, //[/http://healingtaousa.com/cgi-bin/articles.pl,%20contains%20alot%20of%20articles%20on%20the%20healing%20tao%20system%20of%20taoist%20alchemy/chi%20kung.%20%20This%20link,%20http://alchemicaltaoism.com/, is culled experiences from several practitioners with many years of experience in the system...the whole site is conveniently available for download.

The other night I had a dream with a Japanese prince (or so I thought).  He was going to perform a knighting ceremony with a Samurai sword.  I greeted him with the Japanese greeting "Konichiwa" ... to which he frowned some and corrected my that the more appropriate *greeting* was "Tan-Tao" (pronounced tan tow ... like the "ow" in "owl" ).

Does anyone know if "Tan-Tao" is a Chinese or Japanese phrase ... it seems more Chinese to me ...

Thanks for any answers you can offer.

P.S.  Later in the dream, this prince assisted me to OBE into a semi-aware OBE/Dream (astral plane projection *somewhere*).

Cheers!
